Subject: More dumb tri attire questions

Okay...so I got the bike shoes and bike helmet as well as some Pearl Izumi shorts.  Gotta figure out what to wear on top.  I'd go topless but ever since I stopped nursing and lost all my baby weight, my chest is not very impressive to oogle.  LOL.

I've started looking at wetsuits. (I don't want to sink in Tempe Town Lake.   )  This has posed a whole new set of silly questions from me, the green newbie.

What the heck do you wear under your wetsuit (get your minds out of the gutter! LOL)?  I understand you can swim/bike/run in tri shorts, but do you wear tri shorts under your wetsuit?  Do you wear a swimsuit and pull on the shorts in T1?  Do you go commando and give everyone a great show when you pull of the wetsuit?

Also, do you wear anything on your feet during the swim (like aqua socks) or do you go bare feet?

Speaking of feet....when I bought my bike shoes, the guy at Landis said a lot of triathletes do not wear socks while biking or running. :0!  Is this true?  I cannot imagine running without socks.

These are all good questions. First off going commando is out. It is against the rules.

I'm going to assume you are racing the sprint distance. I can think of two options for you to wear under the wetsuit. 1) swimsuit 2) tri top (or sport bra) and shorts. If you chose the swimsuit option, you could add shorts over the suit in T1. The tri top and shorts combo you would be ready to go after the wetsuit came off.

For sprint and olympic distance. I do not wear socks. It can be a pain trying to put clothes on when you are wet and your in a racing frame of mind. In reality, the bike and run distances are short. If you get blisters on your feet, you could put socks on in T2 when your feet are more likely to be dry.

Hope this helps.

I wear a zoot tri top with built in sports bra and tri shorts, this is under my wetsuit and thats all I need besides the shoes on the bike and run. Some people like the all-in-one tri suits too. Go to one of the local tri stores like Tribe or Triple sports and see what they have, the clothing tends to be pricey but my Zoot and Pearl Izumi stuff has lasted really well.

My goal is to change as little as possible in T1. So, I'd wear your trishorts and either a tri-top/whatever you're going to run and bike in under your wetsuit.

Unlike Rick I wear socks on the bike, and then keep them on in the run, so I put them on in T1.

I'd recommend commando under a wetsuit also. It is against the rules, but no one will DQ you and the stories will last a lifetime.

I have a Zoot Tri-top. I don't know how it is for the girls, but I can tell you on my side, I wouldn't wear it for any race unless I had some tape/protection for my nipples.

TMI. Sorry.

    Socks
  • Sprint - No socks for the entire race

  • All other distances including IM - socks are waiting in T2

    Wetsuit
  • You can try some out at Tribe for fit and I believe in the Durapulse endless pool

  • I just bought one from F2R.com. They have great deals on closeouts on last years suits. They use the more expensive Yamamoto rubber and you can just send your height, weight, and comments and they will pick the size for you.

  • Tri shorts and Tri top is the standard for underneath... no need to change... pull it off... put on the shoes and helmet and you are done with T1 (note: I don't have boobs so I can't explain that but for the nips - for longer races put bodyglide on the nips)

  • Aqua socks are for swimming in March at the surrounding lakes

I just did my first tri. I wore my bike shorts for the swim and bike and run and it was fine. I also did the sock thing at it sucks in T1. I have been going without socks for rides and it seems to be fine. There is a article on this subject on BT if you look for it. It talks about running without socks being the hardest to get used to. You will need to break your feet into it so don't try it for the first time at the race. I am building my feet up to no socks for the Nathans. But I am green as a green bean so my two cents is only worth a penny.

In my experience I have found that when wearing my wetsuit I wear a sports bra and my tri-shorts.  Then when I get out of the water I have a dry tri-top to put on over my sports bra.  I usually don't wear socks on the bike during a sprint  tri, but always wear socks when I run.  I don't even use my cycling gloves, too much stuff to worry about.  I have found that the least amount of equipment you have to mess with the better.  It just gets in the way and slows you way down at transition.  Good luck

I'm afraid if I didn't do socks in my bike shoes they'd get so nasty that one day they'd just walk away.

I have issues with blisters if I try to run without them. The lost time in T is less than the time that would be lost because I had to stop.

Sprint it might work, but I just practice the same way the whole time.
