Subject: Transition question

Quick easy question for those of you who have tri experience. Do I need to bring something to keep my bike standing in the transition area or do they have racks already set up for us?

They will have racks already set up for you. You just find your spot, and rack away.

Oh, most races will have rack space that matches your race number. So, keep an eye out if that is the case, and make sure to find your proper rack. You don't want some A-hole jumping all over you because you are in the wrong area.

In most cases, there will be racks for you to put your bike on; they will be numbered somehow - usually, numbers x through y are on a rack and you can put your bike anywhere on that rack. I've heard people say that some races preassign you a spot on a rack.

I did however, do a really small non-USAT sanctioned race that had some racks, but not enough for everyone and I had to lay my bike on the ground. Not ideal, but it was fine.

Yeah, make sure you get there early enough to get a spot. I also did a race where there where no spots, and by the time the race was about to start the racks were so full that people had their bike lining the transition area (e.g. against the fence that surrounded the transition)

Listen to whatever Colfire says.  He's the fastest transitioner I know.

There should be racks, and most races have a numbered spot for you.  That's where you will lay out your transition gear too (towel, shoes, race #, etc.) Try to be courteous to other participants and not take up too much room.  You can practice at home how you will lay it out and what steps you will do in the transition (1. wipe off feet, put on shoes and socks  2.  put on helmet...)

Another piece of advice is to make a mental note of the location of the rack so you can quickly spot your rack and bike when you come out of the swim transition.

If this is a recurring race, you may want to post a message in the board of the State the Tri is in asking anyone who has done the race before what the transition setup is. That or email the race director to ask. The more you know, the better prepared you will be and you will know how early you should be there to get a good spot
