U.S. team drops the baton in the last handoff.

http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/athletics/story/2008/08/21/day-13-track-relay.html

The United States suffered disaster in their semifinal heat. The baton fell on the final exchange, between Darvis Patton and Tyson Gay.

When Gay reached his hand back for the exchange, he never got a grasp of the baton.

"I went to grab it and there was nothing," said Gay. "It's kind of the way it's been happening to me this Olympics.

"I take full blame for it," Gay added. "I kind of feel I let them down."

The men's 100 world champion in 2007, Gay was going for his first Olympic medal after he failed to advance to the 100 final. He didn't qualify for the 200 at the U.S. Olympic trials due to injury.

Just saw the photos online and have a question and a comment.  The question is, what was up with the handwritten race numbers for the USA?  The comment is, good for Lauryn Williams for finishing the race.

Wow, how disappointing--both men and women drop it, and yes, I wondered about the handwritten ones too--we were the only ones??? Weird.

Having coached track and field in HS and worked on handoffs with our sprinters A LOT, I can't see how this could happen!!!!!  We were working with just average kids - not world class atheletes... and we had our handoffs down tight!  I saw so many teams with terrible handoffs last night, almost as if no training went into it but the entire process for the 4x100 was to just pick 4 fast individuals and let them at it.  Even the announcers were highlighting that the 4 fastest people in the world can lose a relay if they run up each other's backs, take off too soon/fast and then have to hit the brakes, etc.

Pathetic.  And not just the US.  A dozen different teams with at least one TERRIBLE handoff.  Even the Jamaican women who will almost surely win it all had a major mistake (they recovered) when their anchor runner took off and ran to the wrong side of the lane and the third leg runner had to hit the brakes!

When did the relay become an afterthought?  I always thought of it as one of the highlights of the olympics.  I know that the 4x100 and 4x400 were always some of the favorite events even at HS track meets.  Thumbs down for USA Track and Field coaching!

X2

I think 4 of the teams in our (USA) heat DNFed.  That's unreal and unacceptable.  They asked, I think Gay, after the race, how much the coaches emphasized the handoff and I think he said something like, "yeah, we practiced it a couple of days ago."

Could rain be an issue? But then again, other teams passed their baton with no problem.

<-- not a T&F person, just curious.

On a lighter note, when asked (rather insensitively, I might add) how did she feel being DQ'd, Lauryn Williams simply said "I had to finish the race." That's sportsmanship.

i think that the relay problems stem from the fact that the teams don't practice much together.  i have very minimal personal relay experience, but our teams in high school practiced exchanges all the time.  i would bet that these teams didn't practice til they go to the facility the first week of the olympics.  i don't care how good you are as a runner, if you don't practice exchanges to get the timing and rhythm and chemistry with the person you are handing off to, then your relay team will fail.
