Subject: Bike Repair Question
I'm not sure how to word this question, so bear with me.

Basically my tires won't inflate anymore. I tried airing them both up today but when I press down on the pump, the air just gets stuck in the hose. When I pump the air when it's not attached to the valve stem, the air blows through fine. When I unscrew the nut from the presta valve and tap it, it leaks a bit of air like normal. I use a Schrader valve adapter and when I put the adapter on the pump and press down, air is going through like normal. The only time it doesn't work is when I attach the adapter to the valve and try to air it up.

What could the problem be? I haven't had any trouble airing up my tires since day 1, and now both tires seem to be failing at once.

It sounds like what your describing is a stuck presta valve- the air isn;t getting into the tire and building up in the hose.

You'll need to somehow "unstick" the stcuk presta valve. This could be as simple as loosening the knurled little collar around the top of the presta valve (never attempt to remove or fully unthread this- it isn't intended to come off) and then tapping the presta valve. If you hear a little puff of air escaping (assuming there is at least a little lfet in the tire) then the valve is open and you can try it again.

Worse case scenario: You may need a new inner tube, but I wager you simply have a stuck valve.

Best of luck with that!

I can hear the air escaping when I tap the valve. The curious thing is that it happened to both tires simultaneously. I tried loosening the collar anyway, to no avail.

Ugh. I need to take a bicycle maintenance course.

By process of elimination, your valve adapter is faulty.

- the schraeder valve releases air

- you are unscrewing the collar before use

- when the adaptor is connected to the pump, air is released.

The only test left is whether air is released when you connect the adaptor to the valve (without the pump connected).

If air is released, there's something far more subtle going on that hasn't been described.

Typical bike pump will not usually engage the valve with the adapter. Does your pump have fitting for Presta? If not, and you are going to use the adapter, use a chuck like for your car. Go to a station and it will pump up fine.

I've been using the adapter for months with no issue until today. My pump does have a presta fitting, but I'm wary to use it since I have broken two valves off when trying to use it in the past. Hence the reason I got the adapter.

Make sure the valve is screwed all the way out and the adapter all the way down. Other than that, it may be a localized incident. (gotta be there to see it)

If it happened to both tires at the same time, it probably isnt the tires. You probably have a problem with the pump head.

Take your pump to another bike, if the trouble follows, then it is your pump.
