Subject: Cateye Strata Computer...stupid thing

I've got a Cateye Strada, (not wireless),  computer for my bike, and yesterday the cadnece senser seemed to be messing up and wasn't recording the cadence correctly.  It kept jumping from the 20s to 90s even though I didn't change my pedaling.  So assuming the magenet or something wann't aligned, I check it again today.

Now the cadence doesn't register at all and neither does the speed!!! The computer just show 0s for both of them.  My bike has been on a trainer since early september, and I've not done anything that I can think of that would effect the computer.

Thoughts???  I'm lost and really bummed.

Does this thing have a warrenty?

Have you tried taking the unit off the mount and cleaning the terminals?

I flooded mine out on the first trainer ride (two weeks ago) and it came back after the sweat dried.  It jumped from a cadence of 90 to 266 and my speed went to 78 mph (no, not even in my wildest dreams do I ride that fast).

The other thing to check would be a pinched or loose wire (probably near the unit rather than the sensor, since it's both functions).

How old is the battery?

Yep, I find that the Cateye wired computers a bit touchy on their mounts too.

The unit is about 2 months old, so the battery should be good.  What did you clean the terminals with?

Try a q-tip and some alcohol.

The mechanic at my LBS recommended a pencil eraser as the best thing to clean the terminal with.  I don't remember the reasoning for why an eraser, but it works.

I also have a Strada (but w/o cadence) and once it started giving me erratic readings I changed the battery and it's been problem free since then. That computer uses a common battery size that you should be able to find with watch batteries at wal-mart or somewhere like that. You could also check www.cateye.com and look at the FAQ section.

Same thing happened to me and still happens every once and awhile. Disconnecting and reconnecting seems to work for me. I agree with others above to replace the battery as an option.

I would clean the terminals, and replace the battery. they are cheap and your bike shop will most likely have them. I use the strada wireless (no cadence) on all my bikes and love them. I like the simplicity of the one button opperation. I recomend replacing your computer battery once a year.
