I just got my Garmin 305 in and took it for a spin.  Worked great for my first use.

I'm new to the Heart Rate based training and have been reading some (Triathlon Workout Planner by John Mora) about it, but sometimes you end up with more questions than answers.

In the book, he bases his Target Zones on the Karkoven method, which is based on a Zone Baseline (220 - age = Max HR - Avg Rest HR = Zone Baseline).  The Garmin 305 comes preset to calculate based on Max HR x %.  The Karkoven method seems to have higher zones because you take your zone baseline x % + Resting HR = Lower limit/higher limit...for instance (based on a 186 Max HR:

60 - 70% Recovery Endurance Zone- Garmin 112 - 130
                                                         Karkoven 141 - 153

What am i missing in the translation?

Maybe i didn't ask the right question, should i reset the HR zones on the Garmin to reflect the Korkovan method or leave the calculated zones?  Which is better to base the training on?

I think that the correct answer is 'neither'.  You should use a more reliable method to determine your zones, IMO.  Many people do field tests to determine their lactate threshold heartrate (LTHR), and figure their zones from there, as percentages of their LTHR.  The field tests posted here on BT should be fine.

As for the zones, there are a few different categorizations.  Lots of people use Friel's zones, which are, as percentages of LTHR:

Z1=65-81%
Z2=82-88%
Z3=89-93%
Z4=94-100%
Z5a=101-102%
Z5b=103-105%
Z5c=>106%

Thank you for your help.  I'll do some more research on Friel's and l've read the BT field test guide.  I'll have to get out and get a good field LTHR.

What Experior said. The 305 only allows for five HR zones, so I treat zones 5a-5c as one.

I'm also due for LT tests both running and on the bike. I'm not looking forward to them. They are worthwhile though.

Is anytime of day better than another to get the most accurate readings?

can the bike LTHR test be done on a trainer.

I unfortunately cant get to an area close by where I can cycle non-stop for 30 minutes. (Traffic and stops)

According to Chris Carmichael, yes they can.
