Total Time = 6h 15m
Overall Rank = 1776/
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 298/370
Pre-race routine:

Coffee and bannana at 4:45 am then got in the car and went to the transition area. Set up transition area and waited, and waited and waited. Then got hungry oops probably should have done the traditional waffle house breakfast.
Event warmup:

No warm up allowed for the swim.
Swim
  • 25m 40s
  • 1960 meters
  • 01m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

The water was especially dirty this morning due to the rain last night. Lots of suspended debries in the river. Other than that I had a great swim.
What would you do differently?:

What everyone would do. More training.
Transition 1
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

This was a long run to transistion and so by the time I got there I was out of breath and not really motivated to get out quickly. I did use the wetsuite stripper upon entering transition and that went well. They had the bikes over stuffed in the transition area which left no room move around. I ended up with a stone bruise even thought the paths were carpted.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running right after swimming more.
Bike
  • 2h 55m 59s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.09 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Nothing more I could have done. I feel I was prepared for the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
What would you do differently?:

No a terrible transition but really should practice more
Run
  • 2h 47m 17s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the most awful run I have had during a race. I ended up walking 90% of the course. My feet were hurting from the stone brusie that I got and my kydneys starting hurting for some unknown reason. I felt as if I had put to much effort into the bike and that I would be able to get past it, but that never happened and I continued to hurt the entire run.
What would you do differently?:

I feel that my lack of run training was the contributing factor here and I needmore of it.
Post race
Event comments:

This was a great race. It was challenging for everyone. It seems to me that a lot of people underestimated the course. I feel that it is worth others looking into doing this race and has the potential to become a favorite amoung us athelets.

Wind: Some with gusts
Course: Single loop. First 17 mile were flat with a tailwind. I knew that the hills and headwind was coming so I did not push hard at all. I really had to restrain myself from keeping up with all of those that were passing me. Once the hills started I was refreshed and able to tackle them with easy. I used feel in my feet to make sure that I was not over exerting myself on the climbs and so as others around me went to strong at the start of the hills and fell off I maintained a consistent pace and passed them at the top at which point I had the power to start accelerating faster while they were recovering. On the down hills once I reached around 20 mph I stopped peddling and got into a very tucked areo position and coasted down. I did get passed by a few that were hammering down the hill but did pass some as my areo position and weight helped. Once I reached the 48 mile mark I knew I was home free and was able to open it up a little more but thehedwinds hendered the speed. I did start passing others that had expended more energy than they wanted to and it was a good ride back in to transition.

you had a quick swim and bike.  What was your "goal" ?  Agree with run. But I think the sun comming out it just made it feel even worse.  Would hate to think how bad the times would have been without the sponges and ice water.

Sponges were heaven

This was a great race for first timers, as long as you plan on getting there early Saturday and Sunday. Logistics were rough, but the course was largely flat and pleasant.

I would because it is a very flat run and great point to point swim down stream. The bike has some nice rollers but completly with in the capabilities of a first timer who puts in the training.

Good report...sucks about your run.  I know it must've been very hot out there around 10am.  This will be my first HIM in 2010.

The sunny heat made the run tough...If only we could have had Saturday's weather on race day!

Nice job A!  Never thought about the canal current, but I'm sure that was a nice boost.  Great bike ride -- sounds like you really worked the course nicely.  The run is where all the training shows up + a stone bruse doesn't help!  I had a similar experience earlier this year on my first AZ tri in May -- 100+F coming off the bike -- that was a tough 10k.

Can't believe the year I leave town, they decide to start a HIM there -- maybe I will sign up for next year...

Congrats!!!
