City of Basalt

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 53s
Overall Rank = 5/200+
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 3/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, got out of bed
dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
and looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream
Ah...
Event warmup:

Bathroom break at the Basalt 7-11
Run
  • 1h 22m 53s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran well... I had hoped to run faster. I ran the first mile in 5:54 then settled into a 6:10 pace for a few miles (where I had intended to stay). I could not maintain the pace however, and made the decision to slow down and simply go for a PB and not an UBER PERSONAL BEST... I think that was a good decision as my legs were really tight but I was able to finish strong with no bad miles... I simply found a groove and accepted it. A personal best is a personal best...
What would you do differently?:

Lower my expectations and start more conservatively. I may have shot my legs on the first steep downhill section.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some watermelon and walked to the car to get Ramone... played with Ramone and waited for Lilia... Relaxed in the sun and hung out for the awards and raffle. Got an age group award and both Lilia and I won raffle items!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably a lack of speedwork this summer. Also, I did just run the Aspen Uphill race 7 days earlier and I ran speedwork on Wednesday for the first time in months. My legs may have had some fatigue.

Event comments:

Fun race. Small town event. Beautiful setting - one of the prettiest races ever! From the Rudi Reservoir and along the Frying Pan (Gold Medal Water) River. Great training!!!

HR monitor not transmitting! Another return to come... Polar watches are not very reliable!!!
Course: From the Rudi Reservoir to the town of Basalt... This course is rolls along downhill from the reservoir with an elevation loss of 1000 feet... Its deceptive though. I expected to light this course up but barely surpassed my flat course PB by less than a minute! The course has downhill sections sure, but the repeated flat spots tightened my quads early... by the 4th mile I was worried that I would stumble home... a much tougher course than I anticipated.

You did great! 1:22! That's a 2:44 marathon, right?
This course was not as easy as advertised, I agree.
I still think Slacker is where it's at, oh well, maybe next year.

Richard......your running speed is freakin amazing!  And somehow I don't think you are in the 40-49 AG?

Nice work, super fast race!

Isn't it interesting how the "downhill" courses can be pretty kick-butt. Sounds like you had a great race though - very fast in my book! I'm thinking this might be a good race for next season! And close proximity to some excellent flyfishing

Run this race... I've run slacker and this one is much more scenic... It is a lot of fun and I'm still too sore to run. I guess I'll go out and ride my bike today... Downhill 1/2 marathons mess me up more than flat full marathons!
