Subject: First race as a race director was today!!!!!
Well today was the day. The weather was horrible but all the volunteers showed up and we had a decent turnout of runners. My hope was correct, the hill that is the main focal point of the race was the talk of the finish line and I think it will become a big race in the future. After this experience I have much more respect for the people that put on the races we love. It is crazy the amount of work that goes into the simpliest of races and I cannot even imagine the logistical nightmare of organizing a big city marathon or an Ironman.

So what was so special about this hill?  Did they see it as a great challenge for the course or something ridiculously hard?  Glad it went so well for you.

Congrats.  I've been talking to a local service group I'm involved with and we (which means mostly me) by try hosting a race next year.   Sounds like you're going to try to make it an annual event.  Anything you would do differently the second time around?

There were many high's and many many lows during the planning process. T-shirt issues, freaking out about lack of registrants, insurance paperwork, and bad weather all were part of some of the issues. No matter how organized and planned you are stuff always pops up. Our course was misdirected which forced people to run through wet grass. This may have been a good thing since most thought it was cool.

The hill is a very long steep hill. Not too hard but just hard enough to make it a great challenge and separate us from the other 5k's in the area. This upcoming year I will put up a website, add a kids race, shorten the walking distance, and put together a promotional package to get more sponsors. The long term plan is to make this a festival type race. Have live music and micro brews at the finish line.
