I don't really read the WSJ, but there happened to be a copy by my desk this morning so I browsed through it and there is a huge article on triathlons in there.  Made me a little sick...

One guy, a 43 year old exec decided he wanted to do a sprint tri so he bought a $10,000 bike, hired a former olympic cyclist to train him twice a week for $125 an hour, and all kinds of other madness.  Another guy, some celebrity hair stylist, spends $50,000-$75000 on racing a year.  I guess good for them, if you've got the money more power to you.  I'm just jealous I guess.

The article kind of belittled just how difficult racing really is.  It's kind of saying how anyone can go out and do it because there are more and more easy races.

There is another thread on the article. Lots of people can read the article now and feel good about themselves in their minds that they too could easily become triathletes. They will then take a good bite of their morning donut, picture themselves crossing the finish line and then, hey, a quarter!!!(something else comes up, dreams of triathlete status fade) We all know better, but kudos to those that read the story, decide to give it a shot and become triathletes.

Sounds like the person who wrote the article has never trained for, or competed in, a triathlon. Also, I think that most fit people can finish a sprint triathlon, but that's not really the point. For me competing in this sport is about improving my times, and working my way up to more difficult events, like Olys or even a half.
On the other hand, if there's a hairstylist out there that can afford to spend even $50,000 a year on racing, I guess I am a little jealous too. I went to law school, and cannot afford to spend $500 a year on racing. He must not have four hungry kids like me.

That's nuts. I wonder how many tris that exec. did. Well i guess if we all had that kind of money it would probably be spent the same way (at least i would)

In a way it's the same idea of Oprah running the Marathorn.  I mean, it's hard work and great accomplishment.  But when a person can afford to hire a trainer/nutritionist, have a more flexible work schedule for more training times etc., it makes the activity seems much easier.

Yes, It is unfortunate how people downplay triathletes and training. If I had the money to spend $50,000 in competing or $10,000 on a bike, I probably wouldn't be trying to squeeze my swim and bike rides in at 5:00 in the morning after working 12.5 hours, but maybe I am in the wrong profession. Naaaahhh, I could not see myself as an exec,(or hairstylist.)

If you're going to spend $50,000-$75,000 on a triathlon, you might as well pay someone else to run the thing for you.

I also liked how the median income of a household subscribing to Triathlete is $155,000!!!!!  Does this mean I need a raise?

I would love to see the race reports from a guy who super splurged on training and another person who spent a "normal" amount. See if money really can buy speed.
