Subject: Power Meter/Wheel = Training + Racing

I'm kicking around getting a power meter. I currently have a set of training wheels and a set of racing wheels. I'm assuming that if I went with a Power Tap (or similar) I would end up training and racing on the same wheels. I know many of you do this...what are my options? Advice? Opinions?

For what it's worth, I like the mental advantage of putting on my race wheels...I always "feel" faster in additional to actually being faster. I was thinking I could get the same effect with a wheel cover.

Had the same dilemma, so I went with a Quarq instead. Crank based power meters allow you to use any wheel you want.

SRM. When I bought carbon wheels, I told myself I would use them permanently. I later changed my mind and train on slower wheels.....so I am hoping I notice a difference on race day. Went with the crank based option so I can switch and still have power. The SRM device works great.....just wish they would make a smaller computer.

I hate to say it, but I wound up having two Powertaps. I'd gotten a good deal on a demo CycleOps wheel and Joule, which I mainly used on the trainer. This year I decided to put one on my racing wheels. A crank-based system would be good, but I am on the road bike a lot too, and swapping that every time I go for a ride seems like more work.

I think the cost of two Powertaps isn't that much more than the Quarg. Either way you need a Ant+ compatible computer, if you don't have one.

I went the Quarq route also. I swap it between my road and tri bike. Both use GXP BB. Training with power requires lots of disapline. Otherwise it's just an expensive toy. I would recommend reading Training and Racing with a Powermeter first and make sure this is something you will do.

I have a PT on my HED Jet 9 rear. I've found the Jet to be rock solid for training and racing. It's an aluminum rim with a carbon fiber fairing.

I'm looking at getting another PT on a shallower rim (Jet 4 maybe?). I find it easier to swap my wheels than cranks, though it's likely that the 9 would end up on my TT bike and the 4 would be on my road bike permanently.

You'll find many get a cheaper rim with a PT and a wheel cover. This also works well.
