When you get down to it, it is interesting how much the English language and English culture is tied to Scandinavia and not to Latin - i.e. opposite from the majority of Europe. There is also a theory that Santa is actually Wotan (Odin), Thor's dad. Odin led hunting parties, and part of the Yule celebration was a solstice hunting party. Like Thor, Odin also has a day named after him (Wednesday is Wotan's Day, like Thursday is Thor's Day) Tuesday is Tyr's day, Friday is Frige's day, then we've got the Sun's day and the Moon's day. Saturday is still based on the Roman god of Saturn (i.e. the Greek Titan of Kronos, father of Zeus. |
