Subject: Yet another smart phone thread... :-) RAZR HD

I will soon be eligible for an upgrade on Verizon. I have the iPhone 4, but am not all that impressed with it and definitely not with the iPhone 5.

I had read reviews and was leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy S III, but was at Costco last night (didn't realize that the S III, 16 GB was $50 cheaper there! That's about the price of a membership!) and the guy there said he would recommend the RAZR HD over the Galaxy S III.

I was thinking about putting off the purchase, but considering the RAZR HD is $50 at Costco...thats pretty dang "cheap"!

My overview of iPhone 4. I've enjoyed it, but haven't been as floored-in-love as I hoped. After less than a year, the "home" button (or whatever you want to call the button on the bottom) stopped being responsive at every touch. I usually have to push it a few times for it to do what I want. I realize that this is the most used button, but I would've thought they had to consider that in their design..and design it to work for...I dunno,...a year?!?! (I didn't get insurance because that is like $10-15/month!! And my previous phone will work if I need it to. I'm usually good with getting phones through the period...) I've actually gotten worse at typing on the iPhone over time and got a bluetooth wireless keyboard for xmas - it's pretty neat. It adds depth to the phone, but I like it.

The iPhone 5 didn't impress me that much. For the first time, I felt that the iPhone wasn't some "innovative" phone in comparison to other phones on the market. Yes, it has some neat features and tricks...but some of the other phones have some "ups" on the iPhone.

So bottom line - anyone have the RAZR HD? Or have another smart phone that they enjoy? (My big "want" is to be able to expand memory, so I don't have to buy the "biggest" phone.)

I cant speak to the RAZR HD, but I can say that Motorola makes great quality phones.  I started with the Moto Droid, and it ran strong for more than two years until I replaced it with a Droid Bionic a year and a half ago.  My Bionic is still going strong and I've had zero issues with it.  I have no need or desire to upgrade it.

Also, I agree with your sentiments on the iPhone.  I took a serious look at the iPhone 5, but realized I'd have to give up a ton of functionality and customization that Android has been doing for years.

A coworker has a RAZR Maxx and he said that battery lasts FOREVER and he uses it all day for work. It's got a nice screen size too.

I have the iPhone 5 and have tested the Nexus, Nokia Lumia 920, Motorola razr maxx, Samsung Galaxay S3, Samsung Note 2, and a couple others.  Based no your expandable memory comment, My suggestion would be the Samsung Galaxy S3 (S4 should be coming out in the next few months, just FYI).

I actually like the iOS best of all of them, but the Nexus OS is REALLY REALLY nice and my second favorite but not expandable.  The samsung is great also and expandable.  To be honest the Razr was my least favorite of all of them.  I take that back, the Nokia Lumia 920 with windows mobile 8 was my least favorite.  Razr was 2nd to last.  It was a bit unresponsive when I used it, and I don't know exactly what they did to the Android OS but it's not intuitive AT ALL, IMO.  Nexus uses the same OS and it's so much simpler to operate.  The razr was clogged up with all kinds of apps I had no use for (bloatware as it's called) and it had some redundancy issues frankly.  It crowded up the screen with a bunch of info I didn't need.  It was kind of like they just vomited a bunch apps on the screen and said "here you go, pick what you want".  I suspect some of this can be fixed with extensive customization, and I believe you can set shortcuts which could fix some of the issues I had with it, but I really had a difficult time navigating to where I could do anything on it.  Both the nexus and the Samsung I could find it within seconds.  Additionally I was messing with the Ice Cream Sandwich OS and they may have Jelly Bean out by now.  That could explain some of the difference I see in Razr and samsung or Nexus.

The screen and camera were great on it, but frankly not visibly better than what you would get in the nexus or iPhone.  I did see a difference in the samsung and Razr pictures (but I had them side by side, I don't know that I would tell the difference if they weren't side by side), that could be screen and not camera also.  battery life is HORRID on the iPhone all the others it seemed fine, and the Razr actually had the best of the bunch for me (remember I had the Maxx).

My personal favorites right now are:

1) iPhone 5 (for me for very specific reason)

2) Nexus (the one I'd recommend to almost anyone and best bang for the buck, IMO)

3) Samsung S3

on a side note I am looking forward to getting a hold of the HTC One.  It really looks impressive.

x2. I had upgraded from a Droid to the Razr for the battery life, and it has met all expectations. Plus it has a nice slim profile.

My experience with Motorola has been terrible as has my wife's before we met. Come to think of it I don't know anyone who has been happy with a Motorola.

Samsung on the other hand is a solid brand, has always worked well for me and others I know. I have 4 family members with Galaxy phones and they are all very happy with them.

If you don't want another iPhone (my 4 is going great at 2.5 years old) I would go Samsung. In fact I am considering buying a Samsung tablet as the iPad is too expensive for my tastes and doesn't allow storage expansion.

I've actually had good experiences with Motorolas, granted that was 5ish years ago. I was reading last night that Google recently took over (last 6 months) Motorola's phone production. However, I'm not sure if that's good or bad...

yesyou're right you can expand it this way, but most of the time when I hear people talking about "expandable", they aren't talking about cords.  They usually want a micro sd slot.  But yes it is a viable option.  My recommendation, if I were going to call the Nexus expandable, would be via cloud services.  Corded storage just isn't practical IMO, but to each his own.
