Gwen Jorgensen announced she will be running for Olympic gold in marathon. Just wanted to check your thoughts, comments, reflections on this....
Any triathlon enthusiasts who run long distance at some point and fell in love with it?

I have my first marathon coming this week, and wondering, how my life will change after that (either: please don't make me run again, or.... so, when's the next one...? )

I salute her for giving it a shot. She's got talent and I think she can throw down a pretty impressive time. I hope she crushes the marathon scene and surprises everyone.

I ran my first marathon after about two years of Sprint Tri's. It's tough on the body. I like how easy cycling and swimming are on the body. The nice thing about running is it's the least expensive of the three and can be done anywhere even when you travel.

True about the training. However, for me the main difference (next to the costs) is that there is more going on in triathlon, you don't get bored. Running for 5 hours (in my case, hopefully...) is going to be the longest and most boring time of my life.

Gwen IS a runner.....she'll be fine.

She's already climbed to the top of triathlon....nothing left there unless she wants to do Ironman down the road when her kids are bigger and she has more time.

Going back to run training only leaves her a lot more time for the kiddo.

Errr...it sounds like you're doing it wrong then...

All of my run training and racing has been done without the "benefit" of earbuds and I manage to keep myself entertained.  (Yes, I've been called weird...)

At times, I've had running partners or run in a group.  Most of the time, I've been out there solo.  My thoughts meander through "stream of consciousness" depending on mood, surroundings, context, etc.  Sometimes, I play the guessing game about pace or when I'll hit some landmark (for a while, I trained with a heart monitor and foot pod for speed/distance).  I'm always taking in my surroundings.  Yesterday morning, it was the cool air, glorious pre-dawn sky, and then the test of the "canine broadcast system."

We will now return to your regularly scheduled thread topic.

I'm excited for her.  I'm really interested to see how it works out.

She already has a gold, so I don't think she needs to prove anything.  I want to see how fast she can get.

Also, I never thought she needed to go long in Triathlon.  She said she didn't like the idea of going long, so there's no need to put that expectation on her.  (I do think that Flora Duffy would crush long distance, though, and would like to see that).

I agree. But there is a big gap between making the US team and winning gold at an Olympics.

Definitely.  As long as someone is paying her to do it, she's not losing anything.
