Holy smoke, had my first brick yesterday. A 45 minute cycle followed by a 35 minute walk/jog (or as Michael puts it "slog" :-) ) . That first 10 minutes off the bike and into the slog were brutal. I loosened up at the end and wanted to keep slogging but had to get cleaned up to go to church. Bummer, would have liked to have seen how long I could go. How often do you guys do brick workouts?

On a side note, I was working at the Awana program with the kids last night and got to talking to one of the dads. He's a fellow man of significant girth and he wants to be my training buddy and run a tri with me in September. Having a training pal is going to be cool.

Good job Hogskin! I haven't done any bricks yet but will soon. I want to do a few before first trace. Pretty cool getting a partner. BTW, Awana is a great program. My daughter has been going for several years!

Keep doing your bricks and this will benefit you. It is obvious that it will benefit you physically, but it will also prepare you for the mental game that you will go through coming off the bike.

My Tri coach had me run 5 or 10 minutes every time I got off the bike toward the end of last season. I had other bricks that were a little tougher, but he wanted to prepare me for those first few minutes off the bike. I have to say that it helped because in my last race of the season, I slogged for the entire run. I only stopped to grab a glass of water at the Aid Station, but it was a break through for me.

Congratulations on that first brick!

I like the language you used for descriptive purposes.

Almost seems like it could be the name of a men's club or a tri club: M.O.S.G.

Michael thanks for the great idea about running after every ride. I just started a couple of bricks, some backwards and can appreciate that idea. Thank you for all the encouragement on the site. I am now learning that the "king of pork" from junior high can be a viable athlete. I am falling in love with this sport. You can race against everyone or no one, you can be fast or slow, but in the end each challenge is a personal mini Mt. Everest.

Joe,
Thanks for the nice words! To me this sport is the greatest that I have ever been associated with. I have been encouraged by so many, so I owe it to others to pass it along. Hopefully if I can encourage someone, they can pass it on and it will help welcome everyone to the sport.

Even when you feel like you are going backwards. Just keep in mind that every time you acomplish a new goal, no matter how big or how small, you are closer to your ultimate goal than you were when you started.

awesome on the brick workout! they will def. get easier as you become more conditioned and have a few under your belt. i like to do one hard brick workout per week followed by an easy one in the same week to "stretch" out the muscles-the latter is done VERY easy.

Hey all, where do I sign up for the Men Of Significant Girth Club? I think that is going to inspire me to make some T-Shirts! ;-)

LOL! Yeah, I reckon we'll have to get some T-shirts. :-)

I've got to say, I've visited a lot of message boards on various topics and this is the friendliest, most patient, welcoming out of all of them. You folks are good people.
