I went to my first function for the Tri Club I joined (Triathlon Club of San Diego). There were a bunch of things going on, but the best part was a guest appearance by Lori Bowden (winner of the Hawaii Ironman last year).

I was really pumped to hear her speak and then answer questions.

One of the biggest things I walked away with was...You have to really love what you do. And being a triathlete is such an awesome experience (just being part of the community and events) that Lori is able to show up, REALLY enjoy herself, and it just makes the competition part so much easier. She also basically said that some people are so intense and wound up that it seems unimaginable that they are enjoying the entire experience as much as they might otherwise.

She had plenty of other comments and tips on training, nutrition, and her own background.
Definitely a cool evening.

Anyhow, I was encouraged, and went for a 30 mile bike ride this morning as a result.

Dan

I must admit to being quite envious of your having met, or at least listened to, Lori Bowden. She is one of my sports heroes among a very short list of sports figures. I am also envious because you have been able to locate a tri club; there is only one club around here and it is a woman's club!?!

Subject: Some of Lori Bowden's training comments...
Training:

She said she swims almost every day. She swims with a Masters group. She highly recommended it.

She makes sure that she gets her time in on the bike at least twice a week, with a moderate run afterwards. She really felt like the area she viewed as the most critical was her biking (I'm not sure if she actually called it her foundation).

She also mentioned that she has at least one very long run a week. She sometimes stops for a snack/treat about 2/3 of the way through. She also mentioned that she sometimes breaks her runs up into one moderate to long run early in the day, followed by a short run later in the day. This short run sounded really relaxed and enjoyable. She mentioned that if she felt like stopping to pat a dog, that that would be totally consistent during these fun runs. She was really into the fact that the triathlete life is and should be fun/enjoyable.
She said she tries to run on trails most of the time to avoid the pounding on the legs, but tries to run on the pavement a least once a week, so that her legs know what that is like.
She wears orthodics while biking, but not while running. I was surprised by that.
She talked about the fact that she usually starts training for the season earnestly by Feb, although usually it was supposed to start sooner.

She talked about doing drills and speedwork on football fields. I think she said she didn't have a real big set routine, including intervals. I had the impression that she did not always have a real specific structured training plan, rather just some general routines.

She said she came from a running background. She did alot of 5/10 Ks with her Mom growing up. Always enjoyed running, but never had a major accomplishments/dominance early on. She said she basically kept plugging away and she just kept getting better. Someone asked when she knew she could be a great triathlete. I think she said she had been doing the races for awhile, and really enjoyed the friendships and kept coming back. One day she found herself in the top 10 finishers (sounded unexpected) and she just kept chipping away from then on. She was really into keeping positive, enjoying the sport, and just hanging in there.

I'll post some of her Nutritioncomments and other misc comments later.
