So after some investigation the Lake zurich tri we've come to love is now:

http://www.bangslaketriathlon.com/and moving over to Wauconda...

This is the event put on by Running Away with the Transition Back Pack and Visor as the goodie bag. Talking to RA they will have a aqua bike and du as well.

The Lake Owners Association made it impossible for RA to run the race at the lake and NOW the association is running a tri on the same weekend at the old location. They can't spell Triathlete right on their website and to my knowledge have never run a race. Sorry you're not getting my money.

I would have let this issue drop but when you tell people to cancel their registration for RA's event on your website all is fair in love and online Forums.

yeah just sounds like an uncool situtation.

they been there a long time and its unfair to push someone out like that unless there is something going on I do not know about.

People who done the race seem to love it and I heard alot of good things about it.

Well said. That's a really crappy thing to do - to ACTIVELY try to confuse people and get them to not do a different race. If they're so good at putting on races (ha) then they should be able to do it on their own merits, and not by trying to steal another race's registrants.

What a crock.  Bangs Lake Triathlon here I come.  I can't believe they are actually telling people to cancel their registration for RA's event and move to their event.

yeah I highly doubt you could switch your registration even if you wanted too. Then again why would you? sounds like an awesome goodie bag and not that much farther from LZ. Some of my friends who helped the LZ tri decided not to volinteer for the new one.

I saw that on the participate list....I'm on the fence. Either Aquabike or volunteer. A marathon the weekend before would make for a painful race.

I am also thinking volunteer or aquabike. After volunteering at Bigfoot this weekend, I think racing would be less exhausting!

Would like some opinions, please. I just completed my first ever tri (a sprint) this past weekend. I'm thinking about doing another one, soon. Would it be a bit too ambitious for me to even consider the Bangs Lake oly tri? I think my trouble spot would most definitely be the run, as my longest run was only 5 miles...and that was on a treadmill. My longest outdoor run was probably about 4 miles...give or take. Am I crazy for thinking that I might be able to finish an olympic distance without ever having run 6 miles before?

The race is about 7 weeks away...you have plenty of time to slowly stretch out your long run to over 6 miles...even adding 1/2 mile a week would work out. If you're concerned though an aqua bike is an option too...Swim/Bike only. I think you have plenty of time to safely stretch out your run.

yeah I might swtich to the aquabike myself. Mine is based on current injury.

I think you can do it but that is also based on assuming you can do the swim and bike distances. remember oly tend to be about 2x the distance of a sprint. Good news is slowing down your pace will help you really extend your distances.

Since its the first year of this course I have no idea how difffercult the race course will be.

I think I can do the swim/bike distances. I've already been doing 1500 meter training swims without any problems...and I generally do at least one longer distance (75-80 mile) bike ride every weekend. I do think I will definitely have to slow down and pace myself through an olympic tri...but I think I'm up for the challenge.

I just pony'd up the coin, doing the aqua bike.....7 days post marathon, my race could be ugly.

But I get the backpack and entered to win a new bike since I did/will do both Big Foot and Bangs Lake.

Ok...I'm still "sitting on the fence" about this one. I need some encouragement to commit. This would only be my 2nd triathlon...my first, was an all-women's sprint distance back on June 22nd. My goal was to finish in under 2 hours...which I did, in 1:31:17. There are some key factors that have me concerned with doing the Bangs Lake tri. The first one being...I've never done an OWS..unless you count frolicking around in Lake Michigan at the Warren Dunes. The second thing is...I've never run 6 miles...outside. I've done it on a treadmill...ONCE, 2 weeks ago...it took me an hour and it kicked my @ss something fierce. The only leg of the race that I'm not concerned about is the 25-mile bike...no problem there, as I regularly bike 3x that amount on any given Sat or Sun. I really want to do another tri this year - as the training keeps me focused on a goal. Without a goal...I'm just mindlessly working out, with no purpose or motivation. But, of course, I'm worried that I might be setting myself up for a gut-wrenching failure if I sign up for this tri. I'd like some HONEST feedback, please. Should I just bite the bullet, sign up for it, and do the best I can in the shape I'm already in...even if it might mean coming in last...or close to it? Or...should I just be content with having 1 tri under my belt and wait until next year to do an oly? How difficult is the Bangs Lake course...on a scale of 1-10, 1 being flat/easy...10 being hilly/challenging? What are the conditions of the lake? Is it dirty, smelly, choppy, cold/warm? I don't own a wetsuit, if that matters. I'd hate to plunk down the $89, and end up doing really poorly, because that would undoubtedly hurt my confidence level. PLEASE...help me make a decision here, folks!!!

If you're not worried about the swim (ie feel safe) just do it

You have the bike ability (its Chicago, won't be hilly)....You can use a run/walk strategy if needed for the run.

My legs will be shelled, so I just signed up for the aqua bike

I'd say go for it.  Like others have said, you can always to the run/walk method to get through the run

Why don't you do the Wauconda sprint this Sunday (http://www.waucondaparks.com/upcoming_events/). It's also at Bangs lake, just half the distance. If you like that one, do the olympic too. I'm doing both.

I actually had thought about that, but being a newbie...I'm not sure I could handle doing both events with just 2 weeks in between. Plus...it's a $$$ thing, too....can't afford to do both. So I think I'm just going to suck it up and go for the olympic.

Well...I survived my first OLY at Bangs Lake. I surprised myself with a sub 3-hour finish, too! Realistically, I had planned on finishing somewhere near the 4 hour mark. To my absolute shock and amazement...I finished it in 2:52:07. The hardest leg for me was definitely the run. The swim was tough at first, but got easier as I went along. I started to swim off-course a few times (it was confusing and the sun was blinding us!!), but once I got myself corrected...I was okay. The bike was exactly as described - "hilly and challenging". I'm glad I practiced some hill-climbing in the weeks leading up to this race...because it certainly came in handy today. I did think some of the roads weren't in the best condition...bumpy, with lots of divots and big cracks that really jarred the bike. Without a doubt, running is my weakness. I felt like I was just shuffling along, while everyone else was just whizzing past me. But once I got to mile 4, I just kept telling myself that I was more than halfway done...so that kept me motivated to keep running...albeit, at a very slow pace...but I never did have to stop and walk like I thought I would. I was proud of myself for that.

Overall, I thought it was a well-run event. Plenty of parking, nice grassy area transition area, decent post-race food, nice awards ceremony, plenty of porta-potties, and quick on-the-spot results printed onto a receipt...NICELY DONE! I'll be back for this one next year.

I really liked the race. The swim sucked but the road was pretty good condition conpared to alot of races i did.
The hills sucked but what goes up must come down. The second half was nice. It was fun saying hi to the lake county racers too. More fun on the second loop knowing I was almost done where some where just starting.

my injury came back to haunt me but I still pr'ed
