I did my first tri back in June and I'm thinking of making this my second one.  I don't know anything about the course, though.  Hope to see you there!

I did the Sprint Duathlon there last year as my first ever event (about 8 weeks after my first workout).  I look forward to returning this September to see how much I have improved in one year.

Nice swim parallel to shore, run upto T1 take the wind out of you as its pretty steep and about 100/200yards. Bike is pretty smooth with 1 or 2 large climbs (for the area) Run is nice and flat over the resivior. If its like last year they had sprint/oly/1/2im, so that made it kind of cool. Very well organized race (most hfp are). Good luck!!

I neglected your question for more info.  I have done the sprint duathlon course twice (September 2007, and June 2008), plus I live close by so I have done the bike course a few other times.  I have now completed 7 total spint duathlons.

I swim is a big loop course around some bouys.

Though I have not done the swim, I could probably answer any questions you still have.

I don't know what else I can add here but I wanted to say that I'll be there, cheering on my wife. That's one of her weekends to race (two little kids, ya know). If you're in the area take a weekend trip a few weeks before the race, stay in the state park and check out the course (maps online at HFP.com). It's a nice one. Welcome to BT and let us know how your training is going.

I've raced Deer Creek twice, including the Toyota event last year and I'm doing it again this year. HFP puts on a good race and the Toyota sponsorship adds some perks (last years T-shirts were cool).

The water is cool in September, but I did it last year without a wetsuit w/ no problem (but I'll be in a wetsuit this year). Save a little gas for the last couple miles of the bike, there is one reasonably big hill that grinds some riders to walking.

Enjoy

Oo, thanks so much for the heads-up regarding the bike route.  Welcome to BT.

I did the sprint last year. Make sure to bring a wetsuit. The water is FREEZING!

The bike and run courses are awesome though. The bike course is pretty flat, and I got my fastest bike split out of all the triathlons I have done so far.

The run is really pretty too. Most of the run is on grass near a lake, and you get to run over a bridge.

I hope to do the race again this year, but there is a half marathon the same day that I want to do, so I don't know yet.

I was wondering whether to wear a wetsuit, so thanks for the tip.

Half-marathon...triathlon...  How could there be any debate?    Well, best of luck to you in whatever race you do that day.

Everyone:

Thank you very much for all the great insider information.

I live only 30 minutes from Deer Creek, and camp and fish there semi regularly, so I'm pretty familiar with the area.

I hadn't planned on a wetsuit, since this is my first tri and they are NOT cheap, but I may rethink that one. If the rest of July is like the last week or so we've been having though, the water may just stop BOILING by the time the race comes around

I am on the first week of an 11 week couch to sprint program, so I will adjust my training a little to coordinate with the race date.

I will see you all there.

You can rent wet suits so don't think you need to buy one. There are a couple sites out there and they are usually $30-100 for the rental.

Good luck on the first tri.

Did my first olympic in June this year at Deer Creek and was a good venue. Swim was usual as it was pretty much a rectangle swim with the bouys. Bike was nice, flat, and fast and as mentioned above two nice hills at the end of the loop. Run at Deer Creek Tri was out of the park over the reservoir and down some streets. A warning, don't know how hot or sunny it will be in Sept but the run is not shaded at all. I believe it is the same course at the Toyota Challenge with the sprint doing 1 lap swim and bike and the 5k run, oly doing 2 lap swim and bike as well as 10k run, and half doing 3 lap swim and 3 lap bike(additional route and section for half to complete before returning to the dam section), and 2 lap on the 10k run.

As of now I'm in for the half but to let a NOTICE out that the race, which is on Sep 14, is the morning after the O STATE Vs USC game. Don't know if this will change anything for anyone but just wanted all the buckeye fans and triathletes here in Ohio know this before they sign up before they start thinking about football in the fall.

JChristoff:
Thanks for the reminder about renting a suit. With everything going on in life and concentrating on just getting my a%$ out there and training, I had forgotten that tiny detail. I will check in to this soon.

Shintri:
Thanks for the reminder on Buckeye ball. I bleed Scarlet and Gray, so I look at it this race as good for one of two reasons:

1. Celebrating a spectacular trouncing of the trojans, with the OSU fight song leading me through the course.
2. THE UNTHINKABLE: a way to get rid of the anger and frustration should something "bad" happen.

GO BUCKS!

Do the half iron distance and there you have your half marathon that day.

Don't know if anyone mentioned it but I've done the half IM a couple times (once when it was Pineman and the other as the Toyota Challenge) and huge factor for me on the bike was the wind. While extremely flat, if the winds are kicked up at all on race day you have the benefit of a great tail wind for part of the ride and then you have to deal with what I found on each occasion to be some of the worst headwinds I've raced in. Just know that could be a factor. Other than that, I agree with everyone's comments - nice course and well organized. Best of luck.

I would really like to do the sprint or Mini distance race but I am not sure if I want to rent or buy a wet suit yet.

I am in for the Oly (or Mini)...

I did the Sprint last year at Deer Creek. A well run race.

Swim, Brutal hill at the end of the swim ( see photo).
Bike - Don't remember anything special about the bike.. no huge hills nor wind (that I recall).
Run is nice in that it is mostly all paved (unlike Buck creek which runs through grass for a bit). The other posters nailed it in that there is very little shade on a pretty course.

Of course you should do this... it is an addiction. Plus, there will be someone behind you for sure (as I am entered .

Seriously though, 99% of the HFP racers are really nice and just out there to have a good time. The Elites are in a class by themselves and pretty much leave everyone alone. The rest of us are just there to finish (with an improvement on our times).

Bring some food, enjoy a nice day.

Post if you have questions... the BTers are really nice.
Cheers,
Chris

HFP does do some amazing work, both racing for them and being one of the elites you mention, we are out there to have a blast and some fun too;-)

this will be my first time at deer creek though so very much looking forward to it.

That pic has got to be from last year. At June's race the water was so high there was no beach and no hill.

So where do you stay? And how far is the hotel from the race site?

I'm contemplating this one.

There are several hotels listed on the site page. The link:

I stay in the campground. It's a nice campground, it that intrests you.
