Someone asked me the other day if there was a better way of breathing. Such as....
In and out through the nose
In and out through the mouth or
In through the nose and out through the mouth.

Any opinions or scientific proof that one is better than the other?

Thanks,
Dunphy

There is no better way.  Whatever works best for the person in question is probably the answer.  I've never seen any scientific study looking at it.

There was a post on this just a few days ago.  Some people find nasal breathing helpful.  There are some studies on it, but I think they are not very good.  Just my opinion.  I think it might help you relax, and slow down, which is often a good thing while training.  I have trouble keeping my pace down during first half of a marathon, so I often breathe nasally to force a slower pace.  Probably best answer is 'try for yourself and see', like Scout said.

I read a story that was related of what a track coach once taught their students:

Breathe through every hole you have -- just get as much oxygen into your system as you can.

Always good advice.

there have been studies on nasal /mouth breathing. During strenous excersize over 80% is through the mouth.

The conclusions were=Don't worry about so much and get all the air your can. Just relax and breathe.
