What would you have done in the following situation in transition?

I'll start by setting up the scenario. While I was setting up my bike and gear at a recent olympic race the athlete racking his bike next to me (staggered) started to lecture me about racking my bike in the assigned spot. He assumed I just randomly picked a spot to rack my bike (my seat was sitting on my number and in the correct location). When I politely informed him I was in the correct place, he did not believe me and walked around the rack to take a look... he did say he was sorry, but was talking down to me.

Ok, here is the kicker...

When I returned into T2, he beat me back, he racked his bike backwards. In other words his front wheel was behind his race number not in front of it, so his front wheel was sitting on my transition towel and all my gear (i keep a very tight space, maybe 1 sq. Ft). I needed to move his wheel in order to get to my running shoes.

What would have been your reaction to this?

Short of finding a ref, I'd brush it off and realize he lives a sad life wherein he must find fault with all others and refuse to accept that people are just people, including himself. He probably has nasty, nasty ulcers.

Really, not worth the stress. Hopefully you didn't let any stress rub off onto you, and you had a great race.

Forget about it. About every third race I encounter someone who is bananas about how ALL the bikes should be racked (everyone else on the rack is usually pretty chill). I don't know if it's because they are nervous or they are just tools. Either way, just ignore them and go about your business.

I would have said "Ok" and then went about my business, ignoring him.

Oh, and in T2, I would have moved his bike over.  If it fell, too bad.

Agreed ^^

What a douche bag! It is very sad that he would bust your chops about the rack, then to rack his bike all over your stuff. Do as I say, not as I do, hypocrite perhaps?

Don't worry about it. Water off a ducks back.
