Can we talk gymnastics?

I used to like women's when I was young. Now I dig the men's. US Team so far so good!

I want to see how other countries are doing.  There are more teams besides China and USA.

After those last two high bar routines we definitely should be talking gymnastics.

No kidding!  I wish I was in bed right now, but this is too exciting to miss!  The US team has looked great except for one of the floor exercises.

Wow. The Chinese team was AWESOME. I loved seeing a bit of emotion from some of them when they won. Very touching.

They've got some HAWT gymnasts, too! Rowwwwrr!

I finally caved and went to bed after USA floor exercise.. I am missing the vault. Yes, I too am interested in teams other than USA China and Japan. Will have to catch the replay of the rest of the events.

The floor exercise routine seems to have changed over the year.. But the rings and parallel bars seems to have remain the same since '84.

I was watching some of the floor exercises last night for the men. It's so funny how they all take those big, elaborate kicks to step to the corner (in ballet, it'd be called a battement). I'm sure it has something to do with the rules in how they must start at the corner, but it just looks funny. What really bugs me though, is how the women really overarch their backs/stick out their chests whenever they land something, or before they start from the corner, or when they're attempting the "dance-y" moves in between each pass. I don't think it looks very good. They have such great lines in the passes, etc but then they totally break it by hyperextending their backs. Dunno, just always bothers me.

Haha. It kind of bothers me too. It's so bad for you too!! You'd think they would have learned by now .

I missed the men's action last night...just could not stay awake. I definitely prefer women's gymnastics over men's though.

Yes, it's definitely bad! I mean, nothing about gymnastics (or dance, for that matter) is particularly good for your body, even compared to other sports. Sure, there are lots of injuries to be had from swimming, running, etc. But gymnastics and dance can be much more damaging in the long run, and the career is much shorter. It's why you can see a 30-something guy (like Jason Lezak) swimming, but you almost NEVER see anyone over the age of 20 in the gymnastics (except for that 33-yo woman on the German team - amazing!). And when I watch those girls hyperextend their joints when it's not necessary (ie, the dance-y elements), it makes me cringe.

I think men's is more interesting.  There's a lot more strength and craziness than in the women's events.  The rings are always really impressive.

Yeah, I like the women's floor routines sometimes and the uneven bars. But the men's stuff is just crazy, like the pommell horse. Those guys are JACKED. Teeny tiny balls of solid muscle, but so bendy.

Of the women's stuff, I think I like the balance bar and the uneven bars the most.  I feel like those are the hardest.  Floor exercises don't do that much.  They always make their bodies look weird during them and it bothers me (like what you were talking about before with the back arch).

OT: I am sure you all know this. When the competition is over, the athletes would put togeter for a exhibition gala. They have done it in prior Olympics so I am sure they will do one in Beijing. Alexei Nemov, the retired Russian gymnast that looks like Val Kilmer, always takes off his top at the end of his routine. Too bad he is retired.

Ooh, I remember that! Delish. I mean, regardless of the face, I don't mind seeing any of those guys shirtless.
