Sorry I forgot his name...

BUT, whey they lifted the guy with the cables to run around the stadium to light the torch, did you notice when he got to the top (just before the run) that he pulled something to release some tension in the cable and turn him more sideways and he kind of "fell"?

For a brief second, I though the left cable broke and my hear lept into my throat....

I had this vision of the other cable breaking......

Yikes, I didn't see that, as I went to bed after the parade of nations. But watching all the other folks flying around on cables freaked me out a little. Was just waiting for one to snap...

You weren't the only one.  I was up at the pub watching and EVERYONE let out a gasp when he did that.  Then we had many unprintable comments about how the choreographers should not be scaring us like that.

Yes it was scary. I was most concerned about the flame setting Li Ning's head, the Prince of Gymnastics, on fire! And it was a very taxing routine. Li Ning trained an entire month for that 3 minutes of spectacle. And he could only train at night because his identity as the last torch bearer was considered as top secret. His codename was "Number 1" at rehearsals.

His name is Li Ning, a multi-times gymnastic gold medalist in the 80s.

The stun was put together by a well-experienced stun crew from Hong Kong.  They had been involved in all those Jackie Chan movies and Croching Tigers etc.  There are multiple wires.  In an interview with Zhang YiMou (I didn't see it.  My mom related it to me verbally), he mentioned a backup plan.  Even a back up guy in case Li couldn't make it for some reason.  Back up guy would be Xiong Ni, a gold medalist diver who challeneged Greg Louganis in the 1984 game at the age of 14.

That said, doing the "running" move when being dangled in mid-air requires great physical strength.  The reason these 2 guys were chosen was, besides their fame, that they are both in good shape.  In fact, both men did the full trainings during rehearsals.  Zhang acknowledged Xiong in his interview even though Xiong did "run" the torch.
