So if you are registered and got the MESP event newsletter, there was a Featured Triathlete in there.  Shameless self-promotion, but it was ME!

"Athlete Feature: Finishing is Winning!

The Nautica Malibu Triathlon presented by Toyota not only brings out elite athletes, celebrities, challenged athletes and those triathletes who just enjoy the weekend challenge, but it also brings out the first time triathletes who overcome obstacles to race Malibu.

Andy Mattick, a local Pastor in Malibu, is one of those first timers. After cheering on the 2007 athletes he was inspired to try the race. His first challenge; he was out of shape, weighing 360lbs, and if that wasn’t enough, he didn’t even own a bike. After dropping 35lbs while training and finding a used bike, he quietly went to register. Like other athletes, Andy found that regular race registration was sold out, which became his second obstacle. His church community helped purchase a charity slot and became the official sponsor of “Team Rev. Big Dog.”

Andy’s last hurdle will be the triathlon. He is continuing to train, lose weight and enjoy his new healthy lifestyle. Andy’s goal isn’t to win his first triathlon, but he desires to cross the finish line that morning and ride up the block a hundred yards to proudly preach a sermon wearing his Nautica Malibu Triathlon finisher’s medal."

I was pretty pumped when they called to say it was coming out.  Unfortunately they edited out the name of my church and my shoutout to BT and all the help it has been.    So I will include that here.

Hi Guys,

I'm brand spanking new here and was hoping some locals could help me out...signed up for the Olympic next weekend, and well I'm not quite prepared.   I don't have a wet suit.  Any suggestions on where in the LA, Malibu area I can pick one up when I get to town.  I'm coming in from North Carolina on Thursday.  Nothing like doing things last second.  Figured I would pick one up and head to the beach for some training - with the wet suit of course.  I have done some open water swims but in much warmer water.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  H

If you want to rent one, you may already have noticed the link on the event website--Xterra is one of the corporate partners for the race and they refer you to them for rental via the Web (http://www.xterrawetsuits.com/rentalprogram-online.html). I can't remember from last year whether or not there was onsite rental at the expo during packet pickup (presumably you'd go there Friday), but it seems to me that there was. If no one else here answers for certain on that point, I'd email them and ask.

For what it's worth, both my wife and I happen to have bought Xterra suits online over the past year and they were really good about turnaround time (including on a size exchange I needed).

(If you want to buy one while you're here, that's another story...and I'll let people who live closer to Malibu handle that...)

Thanks, I appreciate the heads up.  There is so much information on the site...I hadn't come up with that yet.  So I truly appreciate you taking the time to provide that direction.

Hey there - live down at that neck of the woods.  at this point I would echo Tim's thoughts. One other option, if you are truly looking to buy.  When you land at LAX - you will be about 15 minutes north of the Tri Lab (http://www.triathlonlab.com/ ) in Redondo Beach.  They have a ton of sizes, options, and would be a good place to stop in to get something you forgot.  There is NOTHING when you get out to Malibu - we are a rich, but very rural community.  We have a single LBS down at the end of town where the tri is but they sell mostly beach cruisers and are really only good for brake pads and tubes.  Their repair guys turnaround is not so great.  So if you really want to hit a store - try Tri Lab.  The expo is open to you - but my sense is that MOST of the vendors will actual be there Saturday after your race and not on the Friday before.  That will be solely for check in - everything on the website refers to the Saturday Expo and what I hear from the local lifeguards - the lot and beach is only rented Sat/Sun so I would not count on a vendor being out Friday when you get your race number.

Andy, great info.  I will definitely give the Tri Lab a visit.  I'm not familiar with Malibu, so your comments are extremely helpful to this tourist.  I did a relay today, and I'm wondering if I might be biting off more than I can chew.  But I'm excited about learning from watching and listening to how you vets operate.  I appreciate you guys taking the time to help a newbie out.  Have a great week.  H
