I've heard a lot of ugly roof rack stories. Always touched wood at the mention of these incidents. My juju wasn't sufficient, I guess.

After working out with my tri club tonight, I decided to treat myself to a little junk food. Not thinking about my bike up on the roof, I placed my order at the drive-thru, then pulled ahead for pick-up.

Hard to do full justice to the sound it made. Like fingernails dragged slowly across a chalkboard, except the chalkboard was my brain.

Besides the humiliation factor, the damage toll goes thusly:

Roof rack snapped.
Roof dented.
Bike carrier mangled.
Back wheel mangled.
Frame (?!?)

Doing the math in my head is making me nauseous. A careless moment, which I hope others can learn from.

Fast food is the devil, I say!

So the lesson is...stay out of drive-thru's :-)

Seriously, I'm sorry that happened. I hope that you can get your bike fixed. Blonde moments happen, I know I get plenty of them!

A guy in my office did that on his garage a couple weeks ago.  His homeowners covered it.  He has a $250 deductible, got a check for the replacement value of his bike and was able to sell the frame/components for $200.  The bike was 10 years old.  Driving his bike into the garage was quite possibly the best thing to happen to this guy in awhile.

Homeowners huh? Going to get my keys.... Just out of curiosity, what kind of car do you have? I have an Accord. I can go through any drive through I have noticed and not come close. It won't fit into the garage though. After reading about homeowners covering I am thinking that a good smash into the garage might be to my advantage!

Thus, another reason to invest in one of these:

In all seriousness... I'm sorry to hear about your bike and rack.  Though embarrassing, I'm sure your story will make people think twice before going under any sort of "overpass" with a roof rack + bike attached.

I am sorry.  That is one club I hope to not ever join.  I hope your insurance covers it.

Aw, dude, condolences.

But...The Behind-the-car hitch racks do rock, as long as you can keep the bike clean. AND....depending on your bike, that would be covered by a rider on your home insurance...grab one at your first convenience. My rider covers theft, damage, roof rack, and general bad stuff for all of $10/month.
