I can't this year due to a family wedding in Montana, and I'm totally bummed about it.  I did it last year as my first HIM, and had a great time.  If you've put in your hill time, you'll have an epic but awesome day.  You can dig up two race reports on BT, as well as a bunch of posts if you use the search feature... and I also definitely recommend the forums on the savageman website as well... I participated pretty heavily in last year's discussion.

Thanks, Josh ... I mostly train on the Columbia Tri course, so I've put in a fair amount of hills.  My goal is to finish and enjoy -- I'm definitely not going for time!

I'd STRONGLY advise driving out to deep creek and riding the course one or two times before the race.  There is a cue sheet on the savageman website.

It will help you learn to pace the thing, help you have an appreciation for the work that will be required and how to somehow save yourself for the run, and it is a killer workout that you simply can't duplicate East of Frederick MD in my humble opinion.

I rode the course 5-6 times (once half way due to a crash) last year, and it was hands down the best thing I did for myself in race prep.  Good enough to get me a first place podium in my division.  Every one of those trips was a day trip... left early saturday morning... was riding by 9:30 in DCL... off the bike in time for an early dinner at Subway... and home and out like a light by mid-evening.

Did I mention that now would be a great time to get out and ride the course and that I think you'd be doing yourself a real disservice not to?  Normally I scoff at the idea of riding a course in advance... not that it won't benefit, just that I don't think it's a big deal... but I don't think that way at all about savageman.  You can't appreciate what you're in for until you go do it.

Josh is right.  Or you could just stick around here and ride up Ilchester in Ellicott City a bunch of times.  Either way, I'm not sure riding the Columbia course is going to cut it.  Virtually everyone I know who did the race last year (about half a dozen people) previewed the course at least once before the race.

P.S.  Yes, you are crazy, but that's why we all come to BT.

Anyone up for it?

I'd love to make it to DCL but I don't want to ride the course by myself ... I could, of course, but I'd appreciate some company.  Anyone?

If I wasn't tapering for a race on the 6th, I'd be all over that offer (I miss savageman rides). Hopefully you can find someone here or on the savageman forums. I hooked up with a couple people for group rides from there last year.

Thanks, Josh!  I actually did find someone to ride with this weekend (he lives in Westernport) --- he's ridden the course several times which is awesome.  Thanks for that piece of advice (to check out the SM forumsSmile
