Subject: Ironman Louisville question

How or why is it that I saw a lot of times over the 17 hour mark?  I understand that it is a stagger start, but I thought this was taken into consideration according to an athlete's timing chip?  Is this incorrect, or do they have more than 17 hours to finish this race?  If so, why is this race different than all the other races?

Thanks!

Congrats TO ALL THAT PARTICIPATED THIS WEEKEND!!!

This is the only Ironman race where there was a Time Trial start for the swim.
The official start of the 17 hour time clock began when the last age-grouper was in the water.

How do I know this?  I was a volunteer over the weekend, working swim timing at the beginning of the day, and then being a Catcher at the end of the day.

Because they keep the finish line open until 17 hrs after the last swim starter you can start earlier, finish over 17 hrs and still be greeted at the finish as a finisher...they don't turn the timing system off until 17+ last starter so that's why you see 17+ times.  BUT, you still need to be sub 17 to be official.  Those with 17+ times will not get a finisher certification.  It's not a perfect system since those athletes will still get finisher bags with shirts and hats.

JeepFleeb - 2008-09-02 10:52 AM The finish is open for 17hrs plus the time it took to get every finisher in the water. So the finish clock will show 17+. You still have be 16:59:59 or faster (chip time) to be an official finisher.

whats strange though is at the awards ceremony there were two people that were top five in their age groups that were called on stage for 17+ hr times. So they were given hardware for a 17+ hr IM time. I'll look up the age groups but I'm thinking it was either the 56-59 or 60 + y/o men.

Just finding one in the male 65-69 age group 4th place is a plus 17 hr. I just hope I live that long

So they get a medal, hat, and a FINISHING time on the internet?  Sounds like a finisher to me?!  Seems to be a gray area somewhere!  No biggie... They still stuck it out that long!  GOOD FOR THEM!

A friend of mine finished in 17+  soooo, when he gets back,  do I congratulate him on finishing or offer condolances and a "nice try"?

Either way, he did better than I would have....I haven't done my first IM....yet.
