Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Quick question in regards to the IM Louisville "line" to start the TT swim... What time did everyone get down there (about, I know you had a lot on your mind) and where did that place you in the line? I have a sister and a best friend who are inquiring for 2009... Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Once again, I don't know how you guys did it, so very, very, very impressed! |

To answer your questions...my group got there at about 6:30 and were very close to the end of the line. There's no way I would show up as early as possible just to wait for 2 hours (we still waited over an hour). By showing up later (7:00 +) you miss the anthem and Old Kentucky Home, but those of us in the back half of the line didn't hear any of it anyway. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got there about 5:35ish and lined up right at the end of the porto-potties (maybe 300 people in front of me). but a ton of people got their much later and just cut in line at the arch once the swim started. i personally hate the TT start as it causes a severe traffic jam the first 30 miles of the bike. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got there around 5:45 and was about 50 yards down from the port or potties. Got into the water at 7:21. If I had it to do again, I would probably have just waited until the last minute and gotten into line. However, if your sister and friend are weak swimmers they may want to get there really early and get in the front of the line as it will give them an extra 45 - 60 minutes to make the cutoff time. Yeah! What was with the group of people who were standing on the hill and cut in front of everyone? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was at transition right at 5:00 and at the swim start line with Abbie (AbbieR) and Karen (KSH) at 5:30. The line was already so long. I think we entered the water around 7:15. We were also upset about the number of people that just walked right up and skipped line. What was the deal? It was really rude. Although I wanted to be early in line, there really was not any advantage. |

That doesn't make any sense. It should significantly stretch out the bike start and lighten traffic when compared to a mass start. Instead of a 1.3 hr difference in bike start times found in mass start races, Louisville had a 2.1 - 2.2 hr range. I guess the complaint could be that if you are a fast cyclist and you start toward the back of the swim THEN you will have to navigate through slower people on the bike, causing a personal traffic jam.

And that is what happened. Did you notice the out and back section was crazy in both directions. It took a while for that to shake out. You had quite a few faster people that had to navigate through all of it. Add this to the on the out and back section, traffic and passing in both directions on some fast down hill sections and corners... it makes for some crazy times. I am not sure if this contributed to the crash at the bottom of the first big hill or not, but you have more chances for it on start like this. yes, you will always have faster people on the bike that will have to pass those that beat them in the swim, but this takes that and stretches for another 40 minutes or so. Yeah! What was with the group of people who were standing on the hill and cut in front of everyone? I was in that group of people, and the people in front of me said they were in the swim line. I think the line for the porta-johns and the swim line got mingled, so people started angling up the hill. As the bathroom line calmed down, you could see the distinct "Y" there, but when I got into that line, you couldn't tell what was what. I do apologize for cutting in line though, in case that made anyone really mad. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SOOOO. . Why the TT start? What was the reason behind the TT start this year? Or is this going to be tradition because they had to do a TT start the first year because of the very fast current? Did anyone ask or hear anything? Sounds like there is not much reason to get there really early, since you can walk up at 7:10 or so and pretty much just jump in. . and your time doesn't start till you do anyway. Is there a certain time that you HAVE to start by? Do they announce this? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was in transition at 5 am, stocked my bike, pumped my tires, then headed straight for the swim start. There were only about 50 people ahead of me. I hung out with Scott (truebrits) until the start. The time actually went really fast. One of the owners of the big boats on the dock volunteered his 2 restrooms on his boat! Much nicer than a porta-potty. I was in the river at 0702, and had a blast. Many fast bikers flew by me during the first half of the bike, but by doing this, totally 'pulled' me and the bike was initially effortless. Did you guys see the highway radar that said "your speed is...."? What was your speed? |

I thought you had a total of 17 hours from your wave or is it from the LAST person to enter the water? Or are you referring to the cut off swim time? Still, don't you have 2:30 hrs from when you enter the water??? Thanks! |

Still, don't you have 2:30 hrs from when you enter the water??? Thanks! It's the last person that hit the water, which was at 43 minutes. My friends were in the "line up the hill" as well. It was assumed to be the swim line, and we thought maybe there were two lines. If you show up late to the swim, make sure that you hit the transition area before it closes. My friends got there 3 minutes before it closed. A lot of people thought it closed at 630 when it really closed at 615. I didn't like the TT feel. How can you race anyone when everyone is starting at a different time? |

Still, don't you have 2:30 hrs from when you enter the water??? Thanks! Because of the TT start, the "course" itself stays open past the usual midnight time. So, if you start at 7:05 and finish at 12:25, you can still run down the chute, get a photo, etc because the course will stay open until 17 hours after the last person enters the water (~12:40). Technically, you haven't made the 17 hour cutoff but its better than having the course shut down around you.
