I know everyone at an triathlon start has a story or path that brought them to the start. But there are always those who stand out from the rest of us. Example: Jon Blais and the Hoyts. I was courious about people like this at races. Tell your story about people you have met at triathlons.

Kelly Bruno is a local town hero.  She lost her leg as a baby due to a birth defect and hit the ground running - literally.  She is a med student at Duke, raced in IM Arizona 13:57:32 and Kona 14:02:34.  She is involved in a local youth running program that teaches girls self confidence through running and I frequently see her at local tris and running events.  She is the sweetest girl to talk to and a great inspiration.

200 meters from the finish line during a race her prosthetic cracked and she wiped out. So she picked herself and her leg up and hopped/crawled her way to the finish line.  What a beautiful spirit!!

My triathlon coach completed her first IM shortly after finishing her treatment for Ovarian Cancer. She trained while she was going through chemo and didn't tell anyone! Prior to the IM, she was at a local race and on her bike when she was attacked by a dog. She broke her wrist when she fell and ended up getting USAT to approve a contraption for her to use on the swim where she esentially piggy backed with another person who did the pulling and she did the kicking. She had 3 flat tires on the course that she had to change with her hurt wrist, but she still finished! She now leads a Cancer survivor  training group for triathlons.
