Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30am...actually 4:28 as I woke up before alarm. Got dressed, drank a Protein Boost and ate a banana and read some news on the internet. Got my stuff in the car and left for the race. Arrived about 15 minutes early and had to wait for them to open the gate. Found a parking spot, picked up my registration packet and set up my bike. 2nd row in from bike exit and 1st spot on the rack!!!
Event warmup:

Very little warm-up. It was freezing cold with the low temps and rain. Miserable is a better way to put it. I'm still racing without a wetsuit and paid for it pre-race.
Swim

  • 500 meters
  • 02m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim is sooo frustrating. To make it worse I forgot my goggles. My eyes were okay during the swim but the OWS felt more disorienting than usual. Water was murky and I felt like I could never see the feet in front of me. Did a fair amount of breast/side stroking. Within the 1st 150M I felt like quitting. Last year average pace was 2:31 vs 2:37 this year. Very disappointed that I was slower this year. NOTE TO SELF: get some good lessons/coaching this winter.
What would you do differently?:

Remember goggles, swim more in weeks leading up to race and finally get around to fixing whatever must be wrong with my technique.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Ranked 9th our 25...didn't feel that fast...felt tired coming out of the water and the transition seemed a long way up hill.
Bike
  • 36m 23s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt like a good job, second guessing myself and wondering if couldn't have gone a bit harder. Little trouble getting shoes in cleats at the start due to the rain and the soles of the shoes being slippery. Last year my avg speed was 19.1 versus 20.4 this year. I had hoped to be a bit faster but still was an improvement.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle. Still think I can improve here.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Ranked 17th in my age group. T2 still slow and wondering if it has to do with putting on socks. Got to work on conditioning feet to run without socks.
Run
  • 23m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Boy, if the course distance was accurate I am extremely happy with this run. Last year I ran a 8:38 pace versus this years 7:27. I feel like the middle mile was slower...seemed uphill and that I really turned it on for the last mile. I finished exhausted and was in zone 5 for the last 3/4 mile.
What would you do differently?:

As with the bike still feel I can get faster. I've been running 1 year and next year will have to shoot for breaking 7:00 pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank a generic brand of mountain dew...boy did that taste good. When the hot food came out it was just nice to feel something hot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim segment. Overall, finished in 1:17:01 versus 1:24:42 last year. Have to be happy with the improvement just wish that my swimming had improved at least a bit this year.

Event comments:

Give the organizers credit for fixing the bike course safety concerns from last year. The staggered starts and coned off lane really helped.

Yeah, not sure if being the last wave only made it worse...seemed very murky and cloudy.  Oh well, lesson learned, keep a separate pair of goggles in my car.

Nice job. We're in the same age group, so look for my report (hopefully soon).

Lost MY goggles after the race - probably jammed in the mud where my bike was!
