Subject: What is needed to swim in the Chatfield gravel pond?
Can someone tell me what I have to do to be able to swim in the gravel pond? I know there is some kind of fee you have to pay to some organization but I dont have any idea where to go to do that or who to contact. Can I pay for that at the Chatfield park entrance or is there someone to pay at the pond? And also does anyone know if it closes during the winter? The pond I was swimming in closed for the winter so I need to find a new place to swim.

Thanks everyone!

-Drew

It closes at the end of this month.

You are supposed to be a member of COMSA (Colorado Masters Swim Association or something like that) or a member of one of the local clubs that have permission.

You also probably want to get a annual parks pass so you don't have to pay to drive into the park.

See:
http://www.comsa.org/
I believe I signed up directly on line here:
http://www.usms.org/reg/

and, I believe, for the 2008 season I paid $35. It could have been $40. There is no way to pay for a single swim. You must pay for the season. I believe there are other organizations that are allowed to swim at the pond - such as Bike Source and CWW - two triathlon organizations. Essentially, I believe, the organizations pay the fee. I think the pond closes in October. I welcome any corrections because could be wrong about some of these details.

It's all about insurance. At least, as far as I understand it...

Swim times are:
Mon, Wed @ 4:30-7 pm
Sat 7:30-10 am

Last day is September 27th.  As stated, you need to be a member of COMSA or various tri clubs to swim.  Gravel pond is located at the south end of the reservoir.  After entering the park from Wadsworth, you would go south at the stop sign a few miles.  The pond is on the right side.  Parking is across the street on the north side of the road.

I would probably buy daily passes to enter the park for the rest of the season.  I believe it's $6/day or $60 for the annual.  If you plan on swimming a lot there next season, the annual is the way to go.  The annual state park pass gets you into any state park in Colorado.

Sorry, I got cut off earlier when my boss wanted to talk about a project.

When I said  you are supposed to get a COMSA membership, that is because if you don't have one, you could actually say you are with any club and the can't verify you.  While I am a COMSA member, if you wanted to swim between now and the end of the month, just go and just go swim.  Don't check in or anything.

Finally, you will want a wetsuit, cause it is getting cold.

Awesome thanks for all the info guys! I just got my tri wetsuit so I was really bummed when I went to use it the first time and Soda lake was closed.
