Subject: First Race Recommendations

This may be posted a little early but I am looking toward the spring for my first tri race.  I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for any races that historically have been good to first timers.  I've done the Publix duathlons in the past and found them to be really well organized.  Is that series good for first timers on the tri side?  Any others out there that I should look for?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

What region of Florida are you looking at? You can go to TriFind.com and do a search for races in Florida at: http://www.trifind.com/fl.html

Thanks for the replies.  I'm in the Tampa Bay area but I'll travel pretty much anywhere within a 3-4 hour drive if the destination is nice enough.

The Publix tri's are good.  There are many tri's in the Tampa Bay area and within 2 hours. The choices are many.

I would make the choice based on the distances and what your strengths are.  My 1st sprint tri was a 900yrd swim.  I was not ready for that.  I got through it but it make the whole event very tough.  Also, there were about 900 people at that tri.

So if you are weak on the swim, do one with a short swim such as 1/4 or 1/3 of a mile.  Most of the runs are the same distance except be aware that some runs are cross country.  The bike distances can vary from about 8 miles to 15 miles

The Crystal river series is very good.  Simple course, triagle or rectangle swim, out and back bike out ad back run pancake flat.
