Subject: Light snapping feeling in lower leg

Last night during a 3-mile run, in the last mile I began to feel a sort of snapping feeling up the outside of my right lower leg.  It felt as if there was a rubber band being plucked just under the skin.  Not painful, but very noticeable and irritating.  This is the first time I've experienced this feeling.

I wouldn't consider myself a really fit, regular athlete.  Just an average, active person.  Plenty of jiggle.  I've been running 3+ miles regularly but usually I take short walking breaks one or two times during the exercise.  Last night was my first time to run straight through.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?  It was a very significant feeling in my lower leg (outer side between calf and shin, ankle and knee) but it didn't hurt or cause residual pain.  It was just really distracting, uncomfortable, and irritating.

I have gotten the exact same sensation while running. I'm glad you brought it up. I could not think of a good way to describe it, but you nailed it when you said "rubberband being plucked just under the skin"...that's exactly what it feels like! It's a very weird sensation...and like you said, it's not painful, just annoying and distracting. I hope somebody out there has an answer for us.

I have this too. Mine is over the top of my knee. The next day I have a bruse on my knee where the feeling came from. Help too!

I too have had this in the exact same location, usually following some extra hard workouts, especially when going down the stairs the following day.  I think 3 or 4 times now in 2 years of tri training.

No pain, just dind't feel like a good thing!

Good news is a day or two of recovery and it went away completely.

I just thought I'd clarify that there is no noise and no pain with my phenomenon.  It is simply an uncomfortable, distracting sensation under the skin.  As if there were a rubber band being plucked just under the skin of my lower leg.  I just thought this occurence was too uncommon, or even bizzare to ask my regular doctor about and get a satisfying answer.

Ziggyrottie, I can't say for certain (since I have no official medical background) but I might guess to say that you condition is, in fact, an actual injury.  If this happens more than few times, I might see a specialist about it.  I have had  ACL replacement and meniscus repair surgeries and what I can say from that experience is there are a lot of tendons and ligaments in the knee that don't get a whole lot of blood flow and thus take a longer time to heal than other injuries.  Perhaps you have an old injury that is being aggravated by your running?

Nichcach, is the sound in your phenomenon a distinct snapping noise or somewhat like the cracking you get in joints or in the back sometimes?  By my guess, the tenderness may be a sign of inflammation.  Again, something a specialist might have more insight on.

I guess we're all in need of a little medical insight but-- haha-- we came here!  Are there any beginner triathlete doctors in the house? :P

Thanks for sharing your input Josh.  Though, judging from your experience, it seems as though it may happen again if I train for another tri, I am still encouraged to know that it seems to be only a temporary non-serious thing.

Still curious as to what it is, but eased to know I'm not the only one and no one else is suffering any major consequences.
