Subject: Vigil for bicyclists in WI

Hi to all...the following is cut and pasted from an email I received:

In light of another severe bicycle/motorist crash in SE WI, the Bicycle Federation of WI is organizing a candlelight vigil for all 7 of the bicyclists killed this year in Wisconsin. Four of these victims, Nancy Sellars, 48; Troy Kozbiel, 13; Justin Hammons, 22; and Gordon M. Kleifield, 44 were killed in SE Wisconsin alone. On Tuesday, September 23rd at 5:30 in front of the Kenosha County Courthouse, there will be a vigil to commemorate the victims, support full prosecution of the drivers that killed them, and to remind drivers to share the road with bicyclists and not drink and drive.  You are invited to come and show your support of the victims families and to help ensure that these tragic crimes are properly prosecuted.

Bicycle Crash Victims Vigil
Tuesday Sept 23rd 5:30pm
Kenosha County Courthouse
912 56th Street Kenosha, WI 53140

I hope to go if I can get off of work early...a BIG if.  I think Mark is going to go.

Point of interest, 2 of the 4 were killed in NW Racine County...where I ride regularly, and where the SoR course is. The other 2 hit - and -runs happened in Kenosha Co.

I don't know this for fact or anything, but my WAG is that this vigil is in response to one drunk driver's recent (last week) release from jail on bond....she wiped out a cyclist from behind, then fled to a friend's house.  This happened in Kenosha Co earlier this summer, shortly after Nancy Sellars was killed and her cycling partner ended hospitalized after after being struck by a drunk driver on  - I believe - 5 mile road in Caledonia. Nancy Sellars was an IM level triathlete from S. Milwaukee.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I ride these roads, all of my friends ride these roads.  I don't want to lose anybody to some stupid hit and run.  Recently Mark and I were riding in Caledonia, not far from where Nancy Sellars was killed, and a guy INTENTIONALLY tried to run me off the road, with no provocation at all from me. On that same ride, in Raymond, the actual town in which Sellars was killed, a driver sped around me, honked, and yelled. I don't get it...I don't know what's going on here but it's scary. And it p!sses me off to no end to be afraid to go out and ride!

Thought this was kind of different, this guy must have been biking fast.

TOWNSHIP OF MOSINEE (WAOW)--  A 41 year old Wausau man, Gregg Bednorski died Thursday night around 8:30, after he accidentally rode his bicycle... into the rear-end of a parked SUV on County Highway KK.

The biker was traveling southbound on KK and Shephard Street, in the Township of Mosinee.

A gray SUV was parked on the side of the road...and the man ran into the rear end.

He was wearing a helmet and protective eyewear, but died of injuries at the scene.

Bednorski was a bicycle road racer, and a member of the Great Dane Velo Cycling Club USCF.
