Subject: Run Question
I am one of the guys who posted a hip soreness/ pain question earlier this week and think I may have solved my problem, but am not sure.  The pain feels like it is typically right in the joint, not muscle.  I noticed two things tonight while running:  My arm motion is a reach across my body and my wear pattern is on the heel and outside of my shoe.  I am thinking about keeping my arms working in a straight line (elbows way back and hands straight through) and making an attempt to kick my feet higher going back and make a conscious effort to keep my knees closer to keep my feet out so I hit the ground square.  Once I wear out my current shoes, I am going to get fitted for my next pair.  I am going to try this minus the shoes over the weekend and see how I feel.  My legs quads and hammys are not getting tired at all, but my hip joints hurt and I feel I should slow down.  It's pretty frustrating.  Obviously I am not a natural runner.  Does any of this make sense??

Sounds like a classic case of "wrong shoes" to me.  As for your arm motion, I'm a big believer in the individualized running form, however it is less efficient if your arms are crossing the center line of your sternum.  However, don't do anything that feels too unnatural.  Sounds like your shoes are offering too much stability and you may be suited better for a neutral shoe, but go to a running store to have them look at your gait.  Running too much in the wrong shoes can cause all kinds of injury, so do it sooner than later... i.e. don't wait for your shoes to wear out before you go -- or you're likely to be completely worn out long before your shoes!
