Subject: Best 70.3 preparation?

I have the New Orleans 70.3 April 5th as my next A-race and I'm trying to decide whether it's better to train for the Houston marathon or the 1/2 marathon (Jan 19th).

If I do the marathon the run in the 70.3 might feel easier but my training time might better be spent focusing on increasing my speed for the 13.1mi run instead.

What do you think?

IF you're already at/near half-IM shape:

Train for the mary, you'll have ~10 weeks left to train for the half-IM after the marathon. Besides, you can still put a considerable amount of time towards the 70.3 training while you're doing the marathon training.

I have marathon for Jan 25th and a April 4 HIM.  I am doing a run focused plan until the mary then I will go for a 10 week bridge plan to the HIM.

My plan is on my training log page.

i think the best choice depends on some things you have not mentioned. what other goals do you have? if you want to run a marathon then you should focus on that this fall/winter. half marathon speed can come later in early spring. another question is whether or not you will be on the bike much over the winter. if you are going to lay off on the bike for awhile then a marathon running base will surely help your spring fitness.

personally, i would train/race a marathon then pick up the speed later.

I've decided to do the 1/2 marathon since I care mostly about going fast, not just finishing.  I completed my first HIM this past weekend and cardio was not an issue for me so I don't think I'll gain much from training for the full marathon. It'll also allow me to spend some extra time on the bike, since I live in Houston we can ride nearly year round. Thanks for all your inputs!
