For those of you who have done or will be doing two ironman races in the same season, I take my hat off you to and bow to your athletic superiority.  After I signed up for IMKY 2009 the thought popped into my haid to do IMAZ 2009 also.  But as the weeks after IMKY 2008 go by and the weather starts cooling off....I find myself less than enthused about training long hours.  I'm still training 7 or 8 hrs a week but I just don't think 12 - 15 hrs a week is in me.

Anyway, congrats to those of you tough enough and fit enought and stupid enough to do two ironman races in the same season!

Well, I didn't complete 2, but I've done the hard part:  Training for 2.  I am not like Aaron looking for a Kona spot, I'm just doing an IM

Will I ever train for 2 IMs in one season again?  Nope.  Add to that I trained for the first IM and the last IM, making for a veeeeerrrrrryyyyyyyyy long year.  It's quite enough

The training for two IM has been a little rough.  I actually don't think it would be too bad if the races were about 1 month apart or 3+ months apart.  2 months apart seems too far apart to not bring the training volume back up, but not far enough apart to let the body have some rest.  This is IMO, of course.  Maybe I just need to stop complaining and HTFU!  :-)  My training buddies that were going to do the second IM with me were in a bike accident about 6 weeks before the upcoming race.  Since they were no longer able to train and are not able to race, some of my motivation was lost.  Also, fall is my busy time at work, so I haven't had the opportunity to take vacation like I was in the summer to train.  Of course, there is also less daylight and it is chilly.  Of course, overall, I am still excited about my race next weekend!  However, there is also a feeling of relief that I'll be able to take a break.  I am ready for Saturday.  Although I have not finished the second IM yet; if I was asked if I would do 2 IM in one year again, I would say YES!!!

Amy, it was actually you and Shaun that I was thinking about Saturday about 40 miles into my bike ride.  It was a good ride but I was glad I was only doing 46 miles and not 112.  It was also cold this weekend and my toes and ears were frozen.

I did 2 in one "season" if you assume IMWI 05 then IMAZ 06 is "a season"

I did IMWI 05 then took "off" (absolutely NO physical activity) 4 months then started a very quick buildup for IMAZ 06.  IMAZ 06 hurt much more than IMWI 05, but still did it.

I am totally in your camp and knew that 15hr weeks were not in me any longer after 8 months of trainup for IMWI 05...hence the reason I took "off" 4 months then had a 3 month consistent train up period for IMAZ.

but yes....its WAY harder to mentally keep up the training for 2 IMs in a season that are a few months apart.

My solution?  Just do 2 IMs in a week...it'll be like a 2 for 1 special.  You get 2 Ironmans off of 1 training build.

Last year I did IMLP in July then I did the Virginia Dounble Ironman in October.  Keeping focused was very difficult because the races were 3 months apart and the distance was more than the first. I have learned from this experience and have a different plan for next year.

I agree with Mike. You guys are nuts (in a good way), and I'm impressed, as I just haven't had it in me to do any hard training since IMLou. Although Mrs Fishie is pretty happy that I'm finally working on that "honey doo" list.

I agree with an earlier post that if the 2 are relatively close together then it isn't so bad. Mine were 6 months apart (IMAZ '06, Kona '06) and it completely burned me out. I didn't put my bike back together until January after Kona.

I did think at the time though that a June (IMCDA maybe) would have been really good timing. A couple weeks off, a few weeks of long training to keep the skills sharp and whamo! back to the starting line.
