Subject: Pomegranate recipes?

I've browsed a little bit and everything I'm finding calls for pomegranate juice. I've got 2 big pom's, what do I do with them? Is it easy to make the juice?

Cut 'em open, scoop out the seeds and eat them - they are yummy! The juice might be a pain in the a$$ to make.

Throw it in a smoothie?

The seeds might not grind up too well - you'd have bits and pieces in your smoothie. But the seeds are edible, so it's not as if it would hurt you.

Toss 'em on a salad - that's usually how I see them used. Or stir them in yogurt.

Easy, yes, but a bit labor-intensive. You could probably put the seeds in a bag, bash them around so that they all burst, and then pour the pulp and juice and such through a few layers of cheesecloth (or a mesh sieve) to get the juice. Alternatively you could cook the seeds until they burst, and then strain them--this is probably easier and less messy than the mashing method, but might result in a flavor that's not as bright.

ETA: since you're going to strain it anyway to get the seeds out, you could just put them in the blender or food processor and let the blade do the work. That way it can stay raw and brightly flavored. The only thing that would concern me about that method is if the seeds are bitter, grinding them up might add some bitterness to the juice.

Pomegranate syrup and jello. Even good advice on dealing with seeds.

Can I put the non-seed part in a smoothie?

Do you mean put the seeds in yogurt?

Throw them in the food processor to get the juice and then freeze it.  Once it's frozen scrape some off the top with a fork and then pour champagne over it....sooo yummy!  I know probably not a "nutrition topic", but it's festive with the holidays coming up!

To get the seeds out without alot of mess and frustration just quarter the pom and put it in a bowl of water to soak. The seeds should pop out and float to the top, you might need to play with the submerged fruit a bit to loosen em up. I used to be anti-pomegranate due to how messy cleaning them was, but this made it a charm. I keep seeds frozen in my freezer.

Those simple martini mixes make a kickass pom martini mixer (i don't usually use those things, but this stuff is KILLER) and you can mix it with Three Olives Pomegranate vodka for a great drink if you're having a party. Garnish with lemon and pom seeds and YUM.

  • ...okay, not so healthy, but that stuff disappeared like magic at a party I had last holiday season!

So you use the frozen seeds in the martini or the pomegranate?

You don't eat the rind of the pomegranate, you eat the seeds, or rather the juicy pulp surrounding each seed.
