Subject: How is my position?
I was pretty dialed in on my bike but decided to change out my aero bars... so...

I am hoping that some of our resident experts can give me some advice on my positioning... Fire away!

and, as always, thanks so much for anything you can tell me.

By "dialed in", are you meaning that you were 100% comfortable in the position? You changed the bars, but what about your position changed?

Here's my only feedback:

1) Your arms may be slightly stretched out. Maybe by only a cm. Could be that you're gripping the bars differently than when you're on the road, or that you tend to slide more forward on the saddle though.

2) In that last photo, and this may just be a trick played by the particular lighting you have in that room, it looks like your knee is splaying outward at the top of the pedal stroke. If this is true, you either need to correct that by opening up the hip angle (again, if you tend to ride more forward on the saddle that might self-correct) or raising the bars slightly.

Thanks for your help and, yes, my legs are going out a bit at the top, but I am not sure what adjustments I need to make to fix that.

mscotthall - 2008-10-25 9:10 AM ...... my legs are going out a bit at the top, but I am not sure what adjustments I need to make to fix that.

Raise your seat ........ it looks a little low or too a bit back (in a static photo).

I will assume that these pictures were taken while you were spinning.

1. Blow this picture up, print it, take a look at the slowtwitch.com article on saddle height.
2. Mark your body on the picture and draw same lines as Dan Empfield does
3. Measure the angle as depicted on the same, generaly optimum range is 145-152 degrees
4. Measure your saddle height from BB to the saddle top along the seat tube, lining up with the center of the saddle rail, document the measurement.

This will verify weather your saddle height is correct. Looking from this angle looks a little low.

Next, try to solve the hip angle and your torso/upper arm angle -cockpit length together. The saddle should go forward, just a little, as indicated above maybe 1cm. Remember, moving saddle forward requires saddle to go up a bit to retain the same distance BB to top of saddle as you previously measured.
If all this is done, you have set the saddle height correct, you rotated forward along the BB which opened up your hip angle a little and adjusted your cockpit length.
Looking from here your position looks ok, just a minor tweak if any. And, I am no fitter, coach or expert on this subject. I only closely follow what Dan Empfield puts out. So you wnat to referrence this with someone who has knowledge and experience.
