So when you go swimming to train for a 500 meter swim, you usually do interval training for like 2000 to 4000 yards per practice. When you do bike training for a 12.4 mile bike, is it possible or a good idea to do interval training in a similar manner for almost 50 miles or so? And then the same for the run, you train for a 5k, so should you do intervals for 9 miles or so? I am just wondering, because it seems odd I spend an hour in the pool or so, and then 30-40 minutes on the bike and 20 running, so I get more swim practice, even though the bike and run legs are longer. I suppose I just need to bike a lot more at a time, or try those intervals for 50 miles.

Thanks

I would have no problem with someone working his way up to 50-mile rides or 9-mile runs while training for that distance. You shouldn't, however, be doing intervals for those distances, nor should you include intervals in every workout. Cycling and running are more stressful that swimming and require greater recovery times.

Thanks, that makes some sense because of the stress if biking and running vs swimming. I just found it odd that when I swim, I train doing like 4 to 8 times the distance of the race I am training for, whereas biking and running is only the same distance or double the race distance.

Really depends on what your goals are. If you're only doing 30-40 minutes on the bike, 3,4 times a week, you're not going to see much improvement. I've done 5K miles on the bike during a year where I raced only sprints.

The distances for training that you posted would have you ready for an Olympic distance triathlon. If you are aiming at running a sprint-distance race, you could get buy with much less time invested. Check out the free training programs here for a guideline.

I am not too new to this sport, I did a half-Ironman last September, and have done a couple centuries before. My goal now is to win a sprint triathlon next year, so I know I need to really get my sprint distance speed up. As the days get colder, Ill be forced inside, but building strength and speed endurance are key now. This winter will probably be spent at spin classes 2-3 times a week, swimming 2-3 times a week for 2000 to 5000 yards, and running sparingly outside twice a week.
