Subject: Possible training routine

I am a clydesdale (6'2" 260 and shrinking) training for the New Orleans HIM in April of next year. I have run two half marathons and done a 150 mile bike ride in the past.

I have unusual living conditions that will dictate my training. I was wondering if y'all would look at it and see if what I have planned is sufficient.

Monday- Run Mileage will vary on how I feel. Currently I put in about 5 miles ( 10.5 min mile)

Tuesday- Run - See above

Wednesday- THis will be the day of my swim. I don't live in the town I work in so I am away from home 4 nights a week. This is when I can stick in the swim

Thursday- Off - I normally travel home after work on this day.

Friday - Undecided

Saturday - Bike and run, Currently at 25 miles ( around 17 MPH ) and two mile run. I am going to add 5 miles and two miles respectively till I can do the bike run portion each weekend.

Sunday off

This is what I have come up with that will work with my schedule fairly well. Do I need to drop a run day and add the swim? What else do I need to do?

 Keep in mind I just want to finish some place other than last.

 Any advice?

my advise is limited because i haven't done HIM, but i don't think this is enough..
when you say in the past do you mean a couple years or months ago?

mon -> swim and run (distances depend on your level)

tues -> weight training (circuit training) and run

wed -> bike and run

thur -> swim and bike

Fri -> off (stretching)

Sat -> long bike

Sun -> Swim (long)

This is what my training looked like prepping last year for a HIM... This is a dynamic training schedule.. Keep in mind.. progression needs to be in this.. frequency is the important thing.. 70.3 mile of fun.

hope this helps a little

My guess is you are probably headed towards an overdoing it plan.  I believe 10% increase per week is sufficient to avoid some potential problems.  Doing a HIM brick every weekend sounds like overkill to the max and a good way to end up DNS.  Why not run, bike, swim off, run, long bike off.

The best way to build base is on the bike.  A 4 hour swim... not likely a 4 hour run...also not likely but a 4 hour bike certainly.  If you can't bike on Tuesday why not make that a core day and do Yoga or something similar?  The ST'ers will probably jump in here and offer an massive increase but I figure 2 runs, 2 bikes and a swim will get you over the line ahead of DFL.

The problem that you'll run into is likely nutrition, nutrition, nutrition.  The majority of your day will be spent on the bike so I would try to make it bike focused if at all possible.  The biggest issue is to remain healthy and as long as that happens everything else will work out.

Thanks for the advice.

 I will take it to heart. I looked at the HIM training plan listed here and I don't think I will have the time.

As far as my training I have run a half marathon and ridden 150 miles in the past 6 weeks.

I think you are right that doing the bike and run portion each weekend might be a bit much and I will adjust according to how I feel. I agree if I am injured all of this is for nothing.

Thursday I am going to add some cross training and do so streching and other exercises.

 Thanks again for the responses.
