Subject: My swims after biking/running

I'm in the military so sometimes we all have to workout as a group so I have to run before I get in the pool.  Or sometimes I bike to the pool.  On these days I find that my swim workout absolutely stinks.  For some reason, I feel that I am swimming deeper away from the surface and when I go up for a breath, I get water.  When my body is fresh I feel that I am right at the surface and I come up with a nice clean breaths of air.  Any idea why this could be happening?  Maybe I am not kicking hard enough because of fatigue which causes me to sink?  (I'm still working on finding a coach)

As a note, I do not feel any muscle failure/pain/soreness during my swim.

2 thoughts:

1.  If you are doing it right, you support your body and keep it balanced in the water with your core.  If you tire out your core by running or cycling, you are going to have issues supporting your body and you will sink.  This can also screw with your roll and coordination between your hips and shoulders, leading to other problems.

2. If you are supporting yourself through kicking and then your legs are tired from running/riding, you may have the same issue as above.

If you don't feel sore or fatigue during your swim, I would guess you just aren't using the sore muscles, which is why your form is going to crap.  For instance at the end of a long or hard set, when my triceps and back start getting tired and sore, I have a tendency to drop my elbow.  If I drop my elbow, those muscles don't feel sore or fatigued (because they are under less load).  When I recognize I am doing it and correct it, they start to complain again.

I would focus on core strength for a while (do a quick routine every night before bed) and when you have to run/ride before a swim, spend extra time warming up with drills that focus on good form.

how long have you been doing this type workout? Initially i had trouble doing anything mixed with swimming, especially after a bike or run. you will adjust over time.. just make sure you don't compromise your swim technique. do you stretch prior to entering the pool? your hip flexors are you used a lot in running, biking, and swimming.. is there a masters swim group in your area?

No I dont think there is a masters group in this area.  I can find a group to swim with on base I'm sure, I just havent reached out to some folks.  I guess just starting off I want to advance as much as I can before I seek assistance with advanced technique/training.  I have seen great improvement since I started last month so I feel good about my progression.

I do stretch before my swims, but it is most likely like you said that I am fairly new to combining more than one of the three consecutively.
