Subject: Clip on aero bars

I have a dilemma... I got some clip on aero bars on the classified forum, but I'm not sure where to mount them... my handlebars on my road bike (no tri bike) ar tapered in such a way that I can either mount them RIGHT NEXT to the stem or out towards the end of the bar tape where the brake cables emerge.

Do I need a different model of aerobars?  Different handlebar?  Or is there a way to make these work?  It seems like they're either going to be too narrow or kind of on the wide side....

Pics may help.

But mine are mounted pretty close to the stem.  Maybe 3/4 inch away.

Depends on how adjustable your clip ons are.  Can the pads be moved out?  You don't want them too narrow to collapse or restrict your chest movement, but too wide reduces aero efficiency.

I think with your limited choices, the "wide" choice seems to be the worst of the two.  attach them close to the stem, and see if you can move the pads out.

hey there... I'm having the same problem mounting HED Flip Lites on my Ritchey bar, as they are tapered as well. I've been told that bars with on oversized/tapered area are usually not made for clip ons, and you're best off swapping your bars for those that are not tapered. It is more comfortable and safer.

That being said, there are some bars with a wider than normal over sized clamp area that will accomodate clip ons at a more comfortable mounting spot... not sure you you have this type of bar.

For example... do not put clip ons on these:

These have an extended oversized area, and good for clip ons:

My clip ons are close to the stem, I had to move my pads out.  It helps, but I am looking into getting true aero bars and attaching.
