Subject: DA 9sp Bar End Shifter SIS Question

I just installed some new shifters along with some other components and have a question about the shifters in particular.  When I place the shifters in indexing mode, I only get about 5 shifts out of them.  One of those shifts in the middle jumps a large gap on my cassette.  Even without the cable hooked up, the indexed shifts would have a large gap between the 3rd and 4th or 4 and 5th shift.  When the rear derailleur it isn't hooked up, I get about 7 shifts or 8 speeds.  I now have them in friction mode and it doesn't bother me too much but what gives with the SIS mode?  Does anyone have a clue as to what I've done wrong?  I've installed STI shifter and Campy indexed shifters before with no problems whatsoever so this one has me a little puzzled.

Thanks,

Greg

You may have over-tensioned the cable.

Did you drop them and have the innards fall out? Unless you line it back up PEFRECTLY, they'll not work right. I had this problem w/ my 10 speed shifters and could only get 8 clicks. The on-line retailer I bought them from suggested this could be the source of the problem. I never could get them to work right and bought another set and returned the defective ones. I had dropped them and swore I had them assembled correctly.

PS: Did you buy them new? DA have a 3 year warrantee to the original owner.

These are brand new (at least in the package) 7800-series shifters.  I aligned the big gap that's on the little round thingy that attaches to shifter facing the bottom of the body just like the instructions say to do and it still no worky.  I've also consulted Barnett's manual and there isn't much in there that covers bar end shifters and the proper alignment.  It's an older version of the book (2004) but bar end shifters have been around for quite some time.  The weird thing about these shifters is that no matter how much tension is placed on the cable, there's a big jump from 3 to 4 (or 4 to 5, I can't remember which one).  I know I screwed something up, I just can't figure out where I went wrong.

I appreciate the responses.  I'll contact the store I ordered them from tomorrow to see what they have to say.  If anyone has any other info that might help, I'd really appreciate it.

Big enough loop? Is the housing cut correctly or did you cheat because the bike is a big size? With a large frame size, you might need to buy a tandem derailleur cable to make the run. Don't short any housing sections to make a standard cable fit. You'll over constrict the cable with a too tight bend.

I ride a 58 with large size aerobars and needed to buy a tandem cable otherwise it wouldn't reach.
