I live in New York- maybe it was a dumb idea to sign up for a May race in Florida. Any suggestions on acclimating to the hot, humid Florida climate?

Hey, I am also a New Yorker who signed up for Florida 70.3. Feels especially "dumb" after this weekends snowstorm ;-) Right now I am wondering how I am going to get in quality bike rides this winter.

Good luck with your training.

My training plan for this race hasn't started yet, but I had thought about the heat and humidity.   (Since Colorado will be cool and dry during the entire training!) I am planning on doing some leg lifts/planks/core work, maybe jumping jacks/running in place if the floor isn't too slippery, in the steam room at the gym.  That's the best thing I could think of so far.

I live in NW Ohio and did this race last year and signed up for this years.  I did make some changes in my training as when doing treadmill and trainer work sometimes I would turn on a portable heater in my basement to get the heat up.  I also swam in our "hot" pool at the local ymca (about 85deg) I was alittle hard to adjust be we got there a few days early and just hung out in the sun to try and get used to it. Good luck and see you there

Did this race last year. I trained in the heat (Alabama) & still almost died on the run. I got rained on almost the entire bike. The sun came blasting out at mile 1 on the run!!! Probably the most miserable I have ever been in my life! How's that for positive motivation Laughing

PS-the swim & bike routes were great!!!

I did it last year and trained all winter here in NYC. There is no way to train for the heat, but you can get mentally tough by training in the cold. Most of your outdoor rides and runs it will be very cold. Just have a hydration plan and take lots of salt!

Good luck.

I'm laughing my head off!
I've only done 1 HIM in my life- last August. I was so miserable during the run, that I'm scratching my head wondering why I would do this again and up the ante at the same time (the heat/ humidity factor).
That's OK- I understand and no you didn't snuff my motivation.

This was my first HIM and third Tri, and I can only chime in and say that the run was absolutely horrendous. We had a torrential downpour on the bike which meant that as most people exited T2, the sun came out, causing the run, which is along a nice little stream and in a wooded area, to be like running in a sauna. No joke. Most people I spoke to were miserable...

That being said, I am back to take revenge, and this time I am prepping with at least two indoor rides per week with no air as well as plenty of treadmill work inside as well.

And I am actually looking forward to it as it's a wicked great race. The swim is excellent. The bike is flat (albeit slightly boring) and there are plenty of spectators on the run as you get to do 3 laps. I am very happy that I chose it as my first HIM.

Oh, and one thing I learned. Leave your running shoes face down while on the bike. As I came back I poured an inch of water out of each shoe before putting them on, and got some nice blisters...

I have a question about this race for those of you who have done it in the past, or who would know about the swimming.  I'll be getting in on the Friday before the race...will I be able to swim in that lake before the race?  It will be my first OWS of the season and since I have some OWS anxiety, would love to be able to get in there beforehand.

I started my 20 week plan yesterday.  Had my daughter's hockey schedule switched around at the last minute, though, and had to make up some of my swim this morning.  Then I have to work New Years Eve and my gym is closed after 5...so I'm having to make a few modifications.  How was your first day?

You won't be able to swim in the lake prior to the race (at least that is how it has been the past few years).  You might want to check out www.LuckysLakeSwim.com.  They have open water swims every morning but Sunday.

Be prepared for limited visibility.  The water is not dirty, just very dark.  You won't be able to see anything past your hand (actually, you won't be able to see your hand that well).  That can be a little disconcerting if you aren't prepared for it.

It wasn't open for any pre-race swimming. I personally hadn't done any OWS swimming, only lap swimming, but that turned out to be a great asset. I should add that I have never seen so many lifeguards in my entire life. It was by far the single most patrolled event I have ever been in, so I think you will find some great comfort in that.

The water is muggy, and it will taste of diesel when you pass the big lifeguard boats, but hey, they're there to look out for us, so put up with it

This will be my first HIM also.  I took a look at the Luckys swim.  Lighthouse1123, have you ever done this one?  It says there are alligators and some slime monster...although this "thing" hasn't done anything more than swim up against the swimmers.  I'm not sure this will help with my OWS anxiety   Hopefully all the OWS I did last year will still help and the long winter break didn't undo any of that training?

Also, I've been hanging out in the steam room at the gym and already notice that I can stay in there longer.  I've been doing some stretching and leg raises...I did 60 straight through today, yesterday I had to stop after 30 and do 2 sets.  I'm hoping to do some jumping jacks or jogging in place if I can ever get it to myself.

Happy New Year everyone if I don't get back here before 2009!

Andria, i've lived in Florida all my life.   There are alligators in practically all lakes and ponds here.....don't sweat it.   Alligators are like most animals, they are scared of humans and won't bother you.   I've been meaning to go over and do the Lucky Lake swim, but haven't.   I think the "slime" monster is more of a fun story than being anything real and the gators will not bother you.   Just think about it.....this guy has been swimming daily in that lake and has never had a real issue (that i know of).

I did an Oly on the same course as the 70.3 this past year and the swim was great.   The water is very dark and you won't be able to see much if anything in the water.   However, it's a good swim and nothing you should be concerned over.   And no they won't let you have a practice swim the day before.

Enjoy yourself and remember at worse there are plenty of volunteers on boats to help if you get nervous.   Go do Lucky's and the 70.3 will be much better.

This was my first HIM last year as well. Im from NJ and was NOT ready for the heat on the run. I had a decent swim, averaged over 20mph on the bike in a monsoon (ex BMXer and MTNbiker, conditions didnt bother me).

Then it all went to crap.

Shoes were filled with water, socks soaked. Never ran like that. Had a blister the size of a jawbreaker by mile 2 of the run. Ended up walking 10 of the 13 miles. It was pouring til mile 5 of the run. Then the skies opened and temps then reached the mid 90's!! Did I mention that in T2 skies were black so I didnt use sunscreen, a hat or sunglasses!!! The sun poisoning on my shoulders was lovely . I will be doing my first IM this year. I elected to do a harder race that has better timing for training. Most of my training comes during the week after 3:30pm. For Florida IM in Nov, will miss too many after work bike rides in sept/oct. Lake Placid in july fits my schedule better for the training, Also Im less worried about climbing if I'm properly trained, then riding flats while being under-trained. For people in the NE eagleman is probably the best bet.

That being said, I love disneyworld. Would love to race there again for fun. I may do the OLY they have there later in the year, Any excuse for the wife and I to get down to florida....we plan on moving there in the next 5 years. We love the heat and the sun. If and when we live in florida i will probably do the race again. But an early season race there while living in the NE...never again.

After MELTING at last year's race (coming from Virginia) I WILL be heat acclimating this year.  This will include:  (sadly, not a joke) trainer rides w/ the heater on and time spent in the sauna.  I don't think my body even knew how to sweat properly last year by May!

My trainer is front of my fireplace.  I may have to light it up for a couple of rides.  I sweat enough as it is.  Doing this would require a mid-ride wardrobe change.

I will remember to apply sunscreen and bring sunglasses no matter what the skies look like in T2!  That sounds miserable!  Thanks for the tip.

Watch your ankles on the run.  The off road race course is riddled with holes that can eat an ankle.
