DENVER -- Lance Armstrong's plans for an independent drug-testing program have been scrapped because of high costs and nearly impossible logistics.

When he announced his comeback last year, the seven-time Tour de France winner said he wanted to prove he was clean, and was teaming with renowned anti-doping expert Don Catlin.

But Catlin told The Associated Press on Wednesday that after months of negotiations, both sides realized the program wasn't workable. Catlin didn't rule out trying again in 2010. Armstrong's next race is the Tour of California, which begins Saturday.

The news was first reported by The New York Times.

This is a real disappointment to me.  With all the $ LA has it could not have been financial.  I've got to think both Catlin and LA both have the personnel and resources at their disposal to work out any "logistics."  I'm a big LA fan, and if it is possible to be a "fan" of a scientist, I'm a fan of Catlin as well.  I was happy to hear they'd be working together on this and wonder what was so impossible to work out?

Hmmm. I'm a big Lance fan, but for sure I don't think he's perfect or a god! Going to such lengths to announce the drug testing program and advocate it, etc. ... it seems a little odd to back out. It's like he wanted the appearance of and to show a great commitment to being ultra-practically-beyond-doubt-clean, but isn't really willing to put the cards on the table.

Then again, maybe he's also thinking of how much more money could go to LiveStrong if he just goes with the same provided testing programs everybody else undergoes.

Check out his twitter - he mentions every time they come to test him....I think he is up to #16 since he announced his come back....so since they test him every other day.....i guess he decided he didnt need his own test also....and who can blame him.....

IMO the past and current testing systems have not shown themselves to be the most reliable.  Don Catlin is pretty much beyond reproach in the field.  Actually coming up with and following through on a program with him would've left little room for doubt either way IMO.

It's not like the guy's walking around with a backpack carrying everything you need to run a blood lab. You need to find a quality lab, setup testing procedures, run through who knows what kind of QA, figure out what customs process you need to follow(if you're using one lab) or how many labs you need to coordinate with(if you want to avoid customs and stay in the country he happens to be in), sort out travel & lodging arrangements for Catlin & his crew, and so on and so on and so on.

That's just the logistics(and I'm sure there's more), that doesn't take into account the costs.

Its a lose - lose situation for him. If he does it and tests negative, the haters will all say that "what do you expect since its HIS program"....and now he cancels it - they'll say he has something to hide....so maybe its best to stick with the third party testing like everyone else.

Still, no matter how much money you have, there has to be a limit to what you can reasonably afford to pay or what you would consider reasonable value. It may be less that Lance didn't have enough money then that what Catlin was demanding for a fee was exorbitant, from Lance's POV. I don't think it's incumbent upon Lance to pony up whatever the doctor asked for just because he made a commitment to do it.

Sigh.  File under "Things they should have worked out before making the announcement" I guess.
