Clearly an east coast bias in this poll.  These polls are meaningless, we really need a playoff system to determine who is the true number 1.

Why is W.H. Harrison so low? He ought to be somewhere in the middle. He was neither good or bad. His tenure was to short to make this kind of judgment.

I think FDR kept this country in a depression longer than it had to be with his socialist agenda. I also think he could have prepared for WWII better. I would not have put him at #3.

ETA:  I am not slamming historians but pointing out a gap in my social circle....

Absolutely!!!  I wonder is the civil war or WWII the tougher schedule?  Clearly the civil war is a very tough conference schedule, but WWII is a brutal out of conference schedule...

I am really glad to see Eisenhower on the list, but am rather dissapointed that Truman and Kennedy both are above him.

I am also surprised that Reagan is so low, but a lot of information about his presidency is still sealed.

Then again I tend to look at success and failure in terms of foreign policy.

I think it would be interesting to see a list of most/least influential presidents, regardless if the influence was good/bad.

Here's my top 5 list:

  1. Truman
  2. Lincoln
  3. Washington
  4. Jefferson
  5. Theodore Roosevelt

Why Truman over Lincoln?

Kennedy has got to be the most overrated president of all time. The guy created as many problems as he solved. Bay of Pigs was strictly his doing and basically led us to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also led us into Vietnam and had no clear foreign policy for dealing with the Cold War.

But he was a good speaker, had a fashionable wife and dreamed of big things that cost a lot of money (space program), and we've seen once again that goes a long way in American politics.

x2

I think the only reason he was on the list was for his involvement in civil rights.

It could be, based on your desription, that history may be repeating itself...

That's funny. I was disappointed that Eisenhower made the list... many failures during his presidency.

Maybe, but building the Interstate highway system has to be one of the more farsighted decisions ever made by a president.  Can you imagine the political and environmental boondogle if the same thing were attempted today?  You can't even cut down a 3" sapling without some nut job worrying about the future of the wooly algid!

After seeing Frost/Nixon a few weeks ago, I've been wondering what history would've been if Nixon had won in 1960.

I always wonder where we would be had McCain won 8 years ago.......
