I'm doing it with my Mom. She has been a severe asthmatic her whole life and this Jan. at the age of 64 signed up for a SunRun clinic !!! I was so proud of her. She's always kept as active as she can, but I've never seen her run, ever. So of course I am running it with her. We may not get there fast, but we'll get there. I've never started so far back before though, I think were signed up for the 1:30 group. I wonder how long it'll take us to edge up to the start line from there. lol

MOMMYTRIZ.............AWESOME JOB for supporting your mom in this!!
I do the Sunrun leadership and it is AMAZING to see people as they learn to run--they have no idea that they really CAN do it!!
As far as timing...you can expect to be one hour in the holding areas at the very least. The run starts at 0900, but in previous years, when I have done it with the 1:30 group, it has been 10am or later before crossing the start mats. Dress with an item(sweater/jacket) that can be discarded safely along the fences that line the holding areas, before the race...a green trash bag with only a hole for your head, works really well for wind/rain/cold and is easily discarded when you start to move.
Have a great time!!
I've put in a request for great weather!
Oh, watch out for the school kids...they tend to dart in and out or stop to tie a shoelace without moving off to the side...some schools bring a busload of kids and they are pretty much unsupervised. They start out fast and end up walking, so you have to watch out for them in the first mile. I say this more for your safety than for theirs....adults don't fare well when tripped

I've witnessed that quite a few times at previous Sun Runs. They're like little Jack Rabbits. lol

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!
I will be in the yellow group in bib #   5862!
Hope everyone gets a chance to actually run the whole thing instead of playing obstacle course the whole time!

Haha Well..

Last two sun runs I was under 38:00, but both times didnt have a timing chip to cross the finish with.  The only other 10km I've done since then was a trail run and the winning time of the race was only 37:32, and I was 39:32, so I guess I did have some work to do!

But dont worry, you just wait, I'm aiming for some incredible time that will blow your socks off :P

Derek, I looked up your time, 37:11, that's awesome.

My time was 39:23. I showed up late and got stuck in the back of the yellow section. I think it cost me at least 23 seconds, dodging around all the other "yellow bib" runners, but doubtful it cost me 1:23, so I guess no biggy.

I saw at least 6 yellow bib people climb over the 7' or 8' fence. In some way, it's a stupid thing to do because if the fence comes down, it will land on other runners. On the other hand, having the fence prevents runners from self-organizing themselves, so maybe having the fence is stupid.

I was stuck in the same spot at the back of the yellows and saw the people on the fence.  That was definetly scary.

BTW congrats on your race, those are some smoking fast times ( at least in my 43 minute book!)

Great job guys!

I definitely didn't see anyone climbing the fence, and I'm glad they got over without killing anyone.  It was definitely a busy day and I hope you guys didnt end up in "mosh pits"!

I just checked VanCityJ's time, 36:52! Derek/VanJ, do you guys follow any online running programs, like VDOT or McMillan?

Great times guys !!!! Wow, we were still hanging out with thousands of our closest friends waiting to get "released" while you guys were enjoying bananas and bagels. lol We didn't cross the start line till 10 AM. My mom and I had a great day, albiet a slow one as her knee started really hurting at about 4.5 Km so we pretty much walked from there. I cannot believe how many people walk this "race". It's just a party in the back. I think our time was about 1:35: something, something.

Turned out to be a great day for a race, good job all. I love being out with so many people and seeing everyone be active! It's great!!

My time was a bit slow this year since I didn't do any speed work and am not training for a 10k run.

Meep - to answer your question, no I don't follow any training program. I used to run track and cross-country back in my school days and had a few really, really good coaches. It's all pretty simple once you know the basics.

In response to your question Meep;

I did follow a BT plan for most of last year, until I started running XC with the UBC XC and Track team.  I've also got a few friends still on the team, and I've been able to mooch some workouts from them, but basically I did enough workouts to get a sense of the sets I should be doing for my speed work/steady state/tempo workouts.  I haven't been running as long as Jon has, but I feel like I have a handle on the weekly progressions I should be making, and the key workouts I need to hit.

Hope everyone is enjoying this BEAAAAAAUTIFUL weather we're having while I'm stuck in my room studying for my last exam of my undergrad!
