Is anybody planning to do this event?  It will be my first HIM.  Only nine people are signed up so far.  I like it because it will be the closest 70.3 to my area (sw PA).  Would they cancel it if a target number of participants is not met?  (I do realize it is a long way off, but it is my "A" race.  Please forgive my excitement.)

I'm a rank newbie so I'm not planning on doing the HIM, but I'm intending on doing the Cannonman sprint tri, and I had the same terror (I mean, there's only TWO people signed up for the sprint distance!

If we sign up and they cancel it, do we get our entry fee back, or are we SOL?

I dunno, but I guess I'll find out.  I am signed up for the 70.3.  I am a rank newbie as well, but I decided to give the HIM a shot.

Pirahna sports puts on that event and a fair number of others. I have raced with them before. I am pretty sure if the race gets cancelled your $ will be refunded. I wouldn't worry too much about how many people are entered. At many of the smaller events folks are permitted to sign up on race day so lots of people wont show till race day. Second, many of the lists like this don't auto update as people sign up. Just keep training, don't sweat what you can't control and if something happens there are lots of other races around.

I'll have to take a look at this one. I didn't realize we had a 70.3 in SW PA.

Are there any other 70.3 tris that are drivable from Pittsburgh area on race day?  Here is my list of SW PA Triathlons or those that are within 2-2.5 hrs. drive:

Pittsburgh (OLY-Sprint-Adventure)
Cannonman (70.3-Sprint)
Ford City (Oly)
Yellow Creek (Sprint)
Lock Haven (Adventure)
Johnstown (Sprint?)

Am I missing any that do not make it onto Tri-Finder?

I believe Savageman 70.3 is in Deep Creek MD, so that is pretty close.  Also, I believe that there is a Oly in Morgantown WV.

Spirit of Morgantown offers HIM, Oly, and sprint races on August 9. Only about an hour and 15 to an hour and a half south of Pittsburgh.

Have a look at www.hfpracing.com for a good number of Ohio races, including some HIMs.  They're the ones who put on the Morgantown race.  They also do a Sprint and Olympic in Akron the weekend after Labor day.   I drove there last year on race day, the others are closer to Columbus (or further), so they would be more difficult for a morning drive.

There are also a couple in Cleveland on 8/2 and 8/9 that could be driven to.  One is the Cleveland Triathlon, and the other is the Greater Cleveland Triathlon!  Both have Sprints and Olympics.

By the way, regarding the low entries on the Cannonman race, I saw the same thing last year when I was considering doing their Brierman race in MD (I didn't end up doing it).  It stayed very low all along, but by race day, the entries shot right up.  I imagine the same thing will happen to this one.

The Brierman race is another one not too far away.  Can't remember the lake, but it's just south of Deep Creek.

The state park that the tri is in is supposed to be quite pretty.  I don't know if anything is interesting in Schellsburg itself, but there is a very popular water park called Idlewild probably about a half-hour west on Rt. 30, in the town of Ligonier.  That would probably keep the kiddies entertained for an afternoon.  Somerset County in general is really beautiful, lots of rolling hills and small farms, and August is a really nice time of the year to take a drive in the country there.  The city of Johnstown is probably about 1 hr northwest; it's chiefly notable for having had the Johnstown Flood (famous disaster), so there's the flood museum and also the world's steepest vehicular incline (basically an upended railway-looking thing, which is actually pretty cool).  The Somerset County Fair is also that week, in the town of Meyersdale, which looks to be a drive of an hour or so from Schellsburg.  Especially if you guys aren't from a rural area to begin with, little kids usually really like county fairs -- all the farm animals and deep-fried food, not to mention carnival rides and the like.

I believe it is the first year for this race. My father-in-law lives in Schellsburg and my Mom is nearby in Manns Choice. The HIM bike course actually passes very near my mom's house. We used to swim and canoe on the lake when I was in highschool I have been there many times since. It is definitely a beautiful area but hillier than I am used to. I am going to do the sprint but I haven't signed up yet. I will probably wait til the July price bump. You may see a jump then as others are waiting also.

As far as things to do... There is not alot locally. Schellsburg has some good antique stores, the crash sight for 9/11 Flight 93 is very close by and there is a memorial there, there is a winery (Helixville Winery) that has tastings.  The county seat, Bedford, is about 15 miles away and has some historical sights but nothing too exiting. Last time we went home to visit I took the kids to Gravity Hill. It is one of those spots where it looks like you are on a downhill but your car rolls uphill. The kids were amazed.

Let me know if anyone has any other questions about the area and I will try to answer. I am really looking forward to this race.
