Subject: First Race--What to Wear?
I have my first race in 1 month.  It is a Sprint Distance: 500y Swim, 16 mile bike, 3 mile run.  The swim is in a large pond.

What is best to wear for clothing?  I have been looking a Pearl Izumi Tri Short for all three phases; and just a regular polyester shirt for the bike/run.  Do I need anything fancier?

Thanks!

have you ever been a spectator at a triathlon?  if so, you know that people race in all types of stuff (at least at the sprint distances).  if not, i would say go and be a spectator and decide what you think you'd be mos't comfortable in.  Good luck

I like my one piece tri suit.  This way I don't have to worry about my gut sticking out.  It fits great under a wetsuit too.  It a little bike pad which is just fine for the run.

Yes, that would work fine for your first sprint.  Maybe down the road add in a tri top and you'll be all set.

Tri shorts at the best investment you can make when it comes to clothing for races.

Make sure it's not too tight of a shirt, or you will fight getting it on in T1 while you are wet.

Good luck and have fun!

Yes on the tri shorts.

Get yourself a compression shirt. Under Armour makes some great ones. Even if you decide you don't like tris you still have a darn good shirt to run in or wear as an undershirt. You can wear it during the swim and you just about won't notice it's there, then you don't have to put a dry shirt on a wet body. Whereas that's amusing to watch it's not fun to try and do.

I just did my first tri.  I bought a new tri-suit on EBay for around $70.  It's a one-piece, short sleeved.  I love it.  I don't have to worry about changing clothes at all, it's comfortable, dries quickly, probably makes me slippier in the water, has a pad on the crotch for the bike (but not so much that it interferes with your run), a couple pockets in the small of the back for gels, etc...

You also might want to spend the $8-10 for a race belt to put your number on so you don't have to worry about pinning it to yourself.  You can just grab it when you leave for the run instead of having to put on ANOTHER article of clothing
