Hi everyone! I'm from Ontario and wanted to try my first OLY on Labour Day weekend. I searched and saw the Michigan Tri is that weekend, so I thought "Great, that's set" only to just realize now that it's the state championships. I'm assuming that means it's probably not going to be a great environment for a first try at the distance? Anyone have any insight? I checked out the website but couldn't find much info other than the course description (which sounds really nice!).

It is a fine race for anyone to do. It is the championship but a lot of people are doing the race as just a race. I did it 2 years ago and it was only my 3rd race ever.

Like J said, it's basically just another tri open to everyone.  I also raced the Oly two years ago and enjoyed it and never cared about point series, etc.  Don't let the name hold you back.

You might also consider the Niles Triathlon on Saturday September 5.

Great event which also features a Super Sprint. It is a longer drive but worth every mile.

The 3D event is a "self-proclaimed" championship. In other words, it is 3D's designated title event but otherwise holds no official standing. I'm thinking of starting up "Jim's Championship" in Michigan for 2010.

I found that this 3D event was especially poorly executed. I'd do another tri for my first tri, but that's mostly because I found this to be such a poor race...
It certainly didn't feel like a championship, so as far as that's concerned, it was fine for beginners (like I was).

That is great to hear.  I am also looking to do the race as my first OLY.  What are the hill like on the bike?

There's a couple of good climbs on the course, but nothing that I would call terrible.   I am not that good of a cyclist (and don't train much on hills) and managed around 19.0mph last year (in the rain).

For those of you that have not yet registered or visited the site, this race has been moved to August 30.  3D says it's because of all the traffic in the park on Labor Day weekend, but I have a good idea it's because they scheduled another race that day in Traverse City.

In any case, if you're registered, you're automatically registered for the race on 8/30.

Just one more example of the cluster ph*ck that is 3 Disciplines Racing.

Yup Cluster is right.  I tried last night to look up some times from last year.  None of the links were right.  I just kept clicking race results until I found the one I was looking for.  Of course it was under a different race name.

Then I clicked on directions, just because I was wondering.  The directions to Holly Rec area take you to Pontiac lake.

In contrast, I have e-mailed EST Events a few times and recieve an answer within a day.

Son of a %#&^$! That screws up all my plans - and possibly the plans for my son's third birthday party as well.  Dammit.
